Atoms Athletics and Activities (01/09-01/14)

Atoms Athletics & Activities

Atom Nation,

Welcome to 2023! We hope that everyone had a great start to the New Year and that your New Years resolutions are going strong! The New Years resolution from the Activities Office is to strive for excellence among our various programs, provide a welcoming environment for our community, and give our student-athletes the best high school experience while at Annandale.

Our programs picked up 2023 from where they left 2022, with hard work and determination to make the Annandale community proud. We had multiple events during our first week and have a full slate on hand for this upcoming week. Don't forget about our winter musical "Firebringer" scheduled for January 20-21, tickets are on sale now! We look forward to seeing the Annandale community come out and support our student-athletes in 2023!

Go Atoms!

Atoms Athletics Highlights

Our first week back from winter break saw our basketball programs, as well as wrestling, get their regular season going again. Gymnastics, indoor track, and swim/dive see their first action start this upcoming week.

Boys basketball had a successful week vs rivals Falls Church and Justice. Varsity boys held on to a nail biter vs Falls Church on Tuesday but came out on fire and win by a comfortable margin vs Justice on Thursday. Two more district games highlight the upcoming week.

Girls Basketball continues to improve as they battled hard in their two games. The scores of each contest do not represent how close the games actually were. Girls follow the same schedule as the boys and have two district games this week but start the week at Meridian.

Varsity Wrestling had a tri-match Wednesday evening at Edison. The Grappling Atoms fell to defending district champion Edison but came back strong in their second match, winning convincingly over Thomas Jefferson. They hit the mat again with JV and Varsity having two matches a piece this upcoming week.

We have officially finished our fall seasons with many of our Atoms student-athletes earning postseason All-District and All-Region recognition.  These student-athletes worked hard and their achievements should be acknowledged! Check out the recipients using the link below:

Coaches Corner

Check out what our Atom's Coaches are saying about their programs! Each week our coaches will give a recap, provide a look ahead, or recognize a student-athlete.

BOYS BASKETBALL, Jerome McAvoy:

Our boys basketball team had an outstanding rivalry week.  Our varsity and JV team beat both of our rivals Falls Church and Justice High School.  This evens the varsity district record to 2-2.  Next week we have our Readers are Leaders program attending our home game against TJ on Tuesday.  All of the Readers are Leaders participants will be recognized prior to tip-off of the TJ varsity game.  On Friday, we head to Mount Vernon to wrap up the week.

GIRLS BASKETBALL, Kenny Gregory:

Tough week for the girls basketball teams as they took on Falls Church and Justice. Freshman and JV came up big with wins against Falls Church. Against Justice, Varsity member Amir Giir-Thiik produced her first double double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Looking forward to 3 big games next week!

GYMNASTICS, Madison Morella:

This week at practice, gymnastics has been preparing for their first meet back since winter break.  On Monday, we travel to Thomas Jefferson High School.  Isabella Cabrera will be adding a new skill to her beam routine.  Let's go Atoms!

WRESTLING, Josh Damico:

Only the varsity Grappling Atoms was in action this week, wrestling district matches against TJ and Edison. Although feisty and competitive with Edison, the Atoms fell 57-18. Bringing that same energy to the dual against TJ, the team won 53-27. Freshman Adam Khaliqi was GOAT of the week for earning his first varsity win with a pin of TJ. Pinning both opponents on the night were seniors Marcelo Pozo and Frank Cordova-Ferrufino.

The team has a busy week ahead: JV wrestling hosts Monday and is at Hayfield Thursday. Varsity wrestling hosts Wednesday and is at Freedom (South Riding) on Saturday.

INDOOR TRACK, Phil Harris:

This week the Winter Track Team continues to prepare for the next couple of meets in two weeks. One at TJ Community Center and the other at the Montgomery Invitational. Also continue to wish Coach Harris a speedy recovery and hope to see him back soon doing what he loves.

SWIM/DIVE, Carmen Lucas:

Swim & Dive is returning from winter break training with a no-meet week. Instead we are hosting our first Swim-a-Thon fundraiser this Thursday where our swimmers will see how long they can swim nonstop for an hour. We are looking forward to our double meet weekend versus TJ and Edison next week and Senior Night on Saturday 1/14 vs Edison.
