Decisions

Critical and Creative Thinking Strategy

Decisions and Outcomes

Decisions and Outcomes thinking strategies are important to practice.  Students must develop an understanding that choosing from alternatives affects events which come next.  Learning to apply decisions and outcomes as a strategy can transfer between academic and social situations.

Decisions and outcomes combines divergent and convergent thinking.  Taken a step further, it results in considering not only short-term effects, but longer-term consequences and implications.

For example, students use decisions and outcomes to analyze character decisions or consider ways to craft a compelling story plot.

Try this:

  • Playing strategy games can be a fun way to practice decisions and outcomes. Choosing to make a certain “play” or move will perhaps determine how many points will be earned, or how the next turn will be set.
  • Talk with your child about a character in a book he or she is reading. Did the decisions the character make change the outcome of the story?  Would your child change the decision the character made?
  • Play a game of “Would You Rather,” and make sure everyone follows up with an explanation of their valid/reasonable decision.
  • Other questions to support decisions and outcomes
    1. If ___ occurred, what would happen next?
    2. What would happen if there were no___?
    3. What if___?
