General Information
Curriculum Night - January 5, 2023
On Thursday, January 5, 2023 we will be hosting our annual Curriculum Night from 4:30-6:30pm. During that time we will have a few optional parent presentations. We will also have a fair style event where parents and students who will be at Oakton HS for the 2023-2024 school year are invited to speak with department representatives to learn more about course offerings and ask questions. More specific information can be found here. We hope to see you there!
Speed Cameras Target School Zone Safety
On December 6, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to launch a pilot program that will have 10 speed monitoring devices (speed cameras) installed throughout the county. These cameras will be in nine school zones and one construction zone. Thanks to our county partners for helping to improve the safety of our students and staff.
Studies show that speed camera enforcement is effective in improving safety by reducing speeding, accidents, and injuries. Read more about the school zone speed camera pilot program.
COVID Testing in January
Mark your calendars! COVID diagnostic testing will be available for FCPS teachers, staff, and students at five locations across the county January 3-5 from 5 to 8 p.m. This testing is for those who are either experiencing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID. Appointments are not required, but registration must be completed before testing. Visit the COVID Testing webpage for more information.
Strategic Planning Community Forums Scheduled
Beginning January 30, FCPS will host a series of community forums as part of our Strategic Plan development process. The completed schedule and locations for the sessions are posted on FCPS' Strategic Planning webpage.
FCPS Inclement Weather Policy
Like last year, the first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days.” These five days may occur consecutively due to a single weather event or may take place as several individual events.
Once these five days have been taken, FCPS will use the flexibility provided by the General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, wherever possible, to maintain continuity of learning.
During weather events, FCPS must consider power outages, technical connection issues, and whether students have access to devices that they may not have taken home the night before.
Allowing five days for inclement weather events allows time to plan ahead as best as possible to ensure everything needed to continue to serve our students and families is in place. This includes allowing for pick-up times for devices, clearing parking lots so those devices can be collected, as well as allowing teachers time to reformat their classes for a virtual format.
More information on weather cancellation procedures can be found here on the fcps.edu website.
December Virtual Parent Coffee - Course Registration
The presentation and recording from our last parent coffee can now be found on the Oakton HS parent Schoology course. Please go to "Materials" then click on "Presentation Recordings." You may find all of our parent coffee materials there from this school year organized by month.
We will be giving a similar presentation on Thursday, January 5 as part of our Curriculum Night.

Schedule Changes
At this time, we are accepting schedule change requests. School counselors and administrators will try to accommodate course change requests, however, due to staffing restraints, classes are extremely limited. Students interested in a schedule change should see their school counselor for the "Schedule Change Request Form". All forms need to have detailed information from student, parent, school counselor and teacher prior to being reviewed by the administration.
Service Learning Updates
Service Learning Enrichment Opportunities
In an effort to highlight enrichment experiences that can connect service learning for students, FCPS has put together a brief one page document with various enrichment experiences. All of these experiences are posted in the Naviance Enrichment Database, but we also wanted to highlight them for our community in case any students might be interested.

Anonymous Tip Line Puts Safety First
If you or your child have concerns or information relating to feeling unsafe in any way at school, we encourage you to reach out to a member of the security or administrative team so that we may quickly address the issue. Students and parents may also utilize the FCPS Office of Safety and Security safety tip line, that you can access anonymously online, by text (888-777; Keyword TIP FCPS), or by phone (571-423-2020).
If your tip is an emergency and immediate assistance is necessary, please dial 911.
Students, staff, and community members should report school safety issues such as threats, unsafe or dangerous situations, illegal drug activity, theft, gang activity, the existence of weapons, vandalism, and concerns about student wellness. Tip line users may identify themselves or remain anonymous.
Concerns that do not impact the safety of our schools—concerns or information about programs, regulations, or policies—can be sent to the FCPS ombudsman online, at 571-423-4014, or ombudsman@fcps.edu.

Oakton Pantry
The Oakton Pantry is thrilled to announce that it is now officially a part of the local non-profit organization, The Eddie Hurley Project (EHP). Nothing will change in the day-to-day operations of the Pantry, but this partnership provides invaluable new opportunities for the Pantry to expand and enhance our outreach in the Oakton community.
EHP was founded in 2018 by Suzzette Hurley DeMers in memory of OHS alum, Eddie Hurley. Inspired by Eddie’s life and his dedication to community service, EHP’s mission is to feed the hungry in our community and support high school graduates with values similar to Eddie’s. For the past four years, EHP has provided SPIL It Forward scholarships to OHS seniors who exhibit Service, Perseverance, Integrity, and Leadership, ideals that were Eddie’s personal priorities. We feel that the joining of EHP and the Oakton Pantry is only natural, and we can’t wait to share our growth with you.
Our 6th annual Holiday Gifts and Groceries distribution was a tremendous success thanks to all of the donors, volunteers, and OHS staff members who helped make it happen. Thank you for so generously supporting our students and their families! Help came from many different sources and we’d like to give a shout-out to some special groups: The Donaldson Family, No Child Goes Hungry, The Pantry Club, Young Men’s Service League (YMSL) Vienna/Oakton Chapter, Vienna Presbyterian Church, Providence Supervisor Dalia Palchik and the Providence District community, Greater Oakton Community Association - GOCA, OHS Science National Honor Society, Oakton Swim and Racquet Club, OHS Chorus Concert attendees, Dr. Niloo Mofakhami and Children's Dentistry of Oakton, and the Miller Heights Neighborhood Association.
