Academic Advising and Course Selection for 2023-24

Academic Advising Season has begun! Starting January 2023, students will meet individually with their school counselor to choose their courses for the 2023-24 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their recommendations for next school year. Just like last year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts, they will meet with their counselor to confirm the selections. In January, parents can view the course selections via their SIS Parent account. If you do not have an active account, please contact Student Services to obtain a login.

It is important for students to choose a course load that will challenge them and help prepare them for their post-secondary endeavors while also allowing for balance with their extracurricular and personal commitments. We take academic advising and course selection seriously and encourage students to seek input from current teachers, school counselor, and their parents as they make course selections. It is important that your student base their choices on their strengths and interests and with their post-secondary plans in mind.

The timeline for academic advising and course selection can be found here (English, Spanish).

Setting the Conditions for Healthy Tech Use at Home and School

January 12 at 7pm - HHS Lecture Hall

Description: Technology can be a powerful tool to connect us with friends and family as well as encourage creativity and learning.  But when healthy norms are not in place, it can also lead to bad habits and create tension between parents and children.  Many of the approaches we hear about (screen-time limits, anti-cyberbullying programs, etc.), while well intentioned, can actually make it harder for young people to learn to be responsible digital citizens.  In this conversation, digital media expert Richard Culatta will share research and practical tips from his new book Digital For Good (Harvard Business Press) on how to create a healthy environment for young people growing up to thrive in a digital world.

SEL Assembly - Gabe Salazar

Friday, January 13 , 2023 we will have motivational speaker, Gabe Salazar, presenting to our students in the auditorium.

Gabe Salazar overcame obstacles of homelessness, hopelessness, and gang influence to become the first in his family to go to college. Now, he travels the world making teens laugh, and inspiring them with his message of hope and making smart choices. Gabe reminds teenagers that no one is born on accident. Everyone has a purpose, and he wants to help them figure out how to dream BIG. Gabe speaks at more than 200 events each year and has spoken to more than a million students. He‘s been recognized as America’s #1 Latino Youth Speaker by *Popular Hispanics Magazine.

New Year’s Resolutions

In December, many people will head to their local Target or Michaels to find a new planner. The crisp, fresh feeling of new paper to write new and improved goals gets some of us excited. When thinking of your goals consider making them SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound), this method breaks your goals down into specific objectives and makes it easier for you to track your progress. What goals would you like to share with your child, to show them examples of healthy adult introspection? Introspection, looking within, is necessary to learn how to manage stress in a healthy manner. What regular coping skills can be implemented into your daily/ weekly routine? Some goals may be physical, spiritual, financial, or emotional. Would it be easier to have serious conversations over a family dinner? Or maybe regular family dinners, spark joy and connection that’s often missing.

Research has shown that family therapy is the best treatment option for young people who misuse drugs and alcohol (SAMHSA). Many people use drugs to manage life’s hardships when they feel disconnected from themselves or others. The opposite of addiction is connection, and young people benefit from connection with their families. Families who have a common mission based on autonomy and openness instead of secrecy and silence thrive. Families teach young people how to manage stress when they communicate honestly and openly with one another. Learning how to manage stress early in life could be a major factor in whether or not a young person decides to use drugs.
