Rising Freshman Academic Advising and Course Selection 2023-24

.

Welcome to Herndon High School! As we are now in January, we will begin to work with your rising 9th grade student through the academic advising and course selection process. School counselors will meet with students at the middle school to discuss graduation requirements, four-year plans, and course options for ninth grade students. Our course catalog is available on our website (Herndon HS > Student Services > Academic Advising > Course Catalog - Rising Freshman) and at the following link https://rb.gy/soqzsx for your assistance. This is a helpful resource as students begin to consider courses for next school year and start to develop their four-year academic plan.

It is important for students to choose a course load that will challenge them and help prepare them for their post-secondary endeavors while also allowing for balance with their extracurricular and personal commitments. We take academic advising and course selection seriously and encourage students to seek input from current teachers, school counselor, and their parents as they make course selections for their first year in high school. It is important that your student base their choices on their strengths and interests and with their post-secondary plans in mind.  In early June, we will email a list of students’ course selections for your review and require that any requests for changes be made by June 16, 2023. Due to staffing and scheduling restraints, schedule changes will not be accepted after that date.

To help you prepare to work with your student during course selection, our instructional team invites you to attend the HHS Curriculum Night on the evening of Thursday, January 5, 2023 (snow date will be January 10). At 6:30 pm there will be a presentation on the advanced academic opportunities (Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment) Herndon offers from our Advanced Academics Coordinator in the Auditorium.  At 7:00 pm on Main Street, you will have the opportunity to meet with faculty members, network with other parents and students, and learn important details about Herndon HS. The information available at Curriculum Night will help guide conversations with your students about their course selections. A flyer for the event is available in English and Spanish.

The schedule for Curriculum Night, a typical 9th grade schedule, a list of the electives available to 9th graders, and a list of important dates are available in English and Spanish.  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, January 5, 2023. If you would like to read more about classes offered during the 2023-24 school year, please refer to Herndon HS’s Student Services Academic Advising website.  We look forward to working with you in the fall.  Go Hornets!
