We hope that everyone has a Happy New Year! It's hard to believe that 2022 is officially ending and we are turning the calendar to a new year. A lot of exciting things happened in Annandale Athletics during the 2022 calendar year and we are looking forward to more of that in 2023! We hope that athletics and activities at Annandale continue to make the community proud and we encourage everyone to come out and support our student-athletes!

Atoms Athletics Highlights
A quiet winter break for Annandale Athletics but a few events did go on.
Boys basketball beat Yorktown on December 20 and followed it up with a win over Green Run before falling to Washington-Liberty and St. Francis in close games in the George Long Holiday Tournament.
Girls basketball traveled to Baltimore and competed in the 695hoops.com Holiday Tournament. Girls played tough against some stiff competition and look to get the ball rolling as they take on Falls Church and Justice this week.
Wrestling competed in two tournaments with several individual performances noted in the coaches corner. The team continues to improve each match as they prepare for the National District Tournament in a few weeks.
Indoor track team was off over the break but standout athlete Miles Lanham set a new school record in triple jump and is now ranked as one of the best triple jumpers in the nation!
We have officially finished our fall seasons with many of our Atoms student-athletes earning postseason All-District and All-Region recognition. These student-athletes worked hard and their achievements should be acknowledged! Check out the recipients using the link below:

BOYS BASKETBALL, Jerome McAvoy:
Annandale Boys Basketball had a busy winter break. It started with a win over Yorktown. It was followed up with an opening round win in the George Long Holiday Tournament over Green Run. We lost close games to Washington and Liberty and St Francis. We get back to regular season play next week with game against rivals Falls Church and at Justice.
GYMNASTICS, Madison Morella:
The next meet is January 9, 2023 at Falls Church.
WRESTLING, Josh Damico:
The Grappling Atoms were busy over the break wrestling in two tournaments. On 12/17 the Atoms were at Woodson wrestling at the Cavalier Classic, placing 7 out of 8 teams, but there were a couple of standout performances; those were Senior 120 lb Marcelo Pozo who won his weight class with a pin over a ranked opponent in the finals from West Springfield and Freshman 126 lb Alex Torres, who won two matches and placed in his first tournament ever. After the holiday the team was back at it in the tough Battle at the Bridge at Woodbridge HS, a 50 team tournament with teams from VA, WV, GA, and PA. Being young and undermanned the team finished 44th, led again by Senior Marcelo Pozo who took 5th at 120. Others winning matches were Freshman Alex Torres (126), Senior Wilmer Chinchilla (138) and Sophomore Jordy Lopez Funes (157). The team resumes competition with district matches against Edison and Thomas Jefferson at Edison on Wednesday, January 4th.
INDOOR TRACK, Phil Harris:
The Indoor Track team returns from the winter break. During the break Miles Lanham broke his own school record in the triple jump and at the time earning a US#1 ranking among high school triple jumpers.
Also the rest of the team prepares for the homestretch of the season as district championships are approaching.

Live Streaming
Please note that for the last year and a half, Fairfax County Public Schools paid for a countywide subscription for all schools and their communities. Unfortunately, FCPS will no longer be paying these fee. All of our events that take place on our stadium field and in our gymnasium will continue to be streamed live on the NFHS Network, but will now have a pay wall that the consumer will need to pay for.
