Atoms Athletics Highlights

Boys basketball saw freshman and JV comes away with victories at John Lewis on Tuesday, while varsity lost an exciting back and forth game with a buzzer beating shot by Andrew Nields to send the game into overtime. The Atoms battled but fell short in overtime. They return home to play defending state champion Hayfield Friday evening (results posted online).

Girls basketball made a clean sweep of Lewis on Tuesday evening. Teamwork was the name of the game for all three levels! This program has a bright future so make sure to get out and watch them!

Indoor Track heads into the holiday break in the right direction with many individuals and relay teams showing strong performances to start the season! They hit the track again in 2023 looking to build on performances that qualified some for the regional meet.

Swim/Dive had two strong showings last weekend sweeping both Hayfield and Justice on back to back evenings! They have one final meet Friday evening vs Lewis (results posted online).

Gymnastics continues to improve on the mat. Their meet this week held the highest team total in sometime on floor routines! They have some time off before getting back on the mat in 2023.

We have officially finished our fall seasons with many of our Atoms student-athletes earning postseason All-District and All-Region recognition.  These student-athletes worked hard and their achievements should be acknowledged! Check out the recipients using the link below:

Coaches Corner

Check out what our Atom's Coaches are saying about their programs! Each week our coaches will give a recap, provide a look ahead, or recognize a student-athlete.

BOYS BASKETBALL, Jerome McAvoy:

Boys Basketball began district play this week and lost a heart breaker at Lewis 59-69 in overtime. The game was an exciting back and forth affair for the fans. Slim had a monster 2 hand slam and Andrew Nields hit a buzzer beater 3 to get the game into overtime. The JV and 9th grade cruised to easy victories against Lewis. The basketball program continued their partnership with Braddock ES in Readers Are Leaders. We have a few games over the holiday break starting with Yorktown on Tuesday, December 20 and participate in the George Long Holiday Tournament December 27-29 at Wakefield.

GIRLS BASKETBALL, Kenny Gregory:

This week the girls basketball team took on their first district team, Lewis, and came up big with wins on all three levels. The Freshman team secured their first win of the season. The JV team had two wins over both Park View and Lewis. Solid team defense and finishing on the free throw line helped them secure both wins. Varsity had a 63-25 win over Lewis led by 7 steals from senior, Shahidah Kargbo, and 24 points from Freshman, Ava Sewall.

GYMNASTICS, Madison Morella:

Annandale had their 3rd meet at South County on Wednesday.  We had six girls compete on floor and beam, three on vault, and one on bars.  Nevaeh Keramidas got to showcase her floor routine for the first time.  Kaylee Rivera also showcased a new routine on beam for the first time.  As a team, we scored the highest on floor routines. The next meet is January 9, 2023 at Falls Church.

WRESTLING, Josh Damico:

On 12/15 The JV Grappling Atoms wrestled well against Oakton and Wakefield, continuing their progress including first wins by Adam Khaliqi and Matthew Giron. GOAT of the week for the event was Freshman Jose Vera Puna (215). The JV is off competition wise until the new year.

The Varsity Atoms were at the tough Sherando Duals; the team scores to do not reflect the effort and progress the team is making. After an 0-3 first day and wrestling host and 2022 4A runner up Sherando first thing Saturday morning, the team found their groove and narrowly lost to Sherando B team 36-30, then beat Amherst County 46-30 and ended the event with a lopsided 60-18 win against Warhill to finish 2-5. GOAT of the week for the event was Sophomore Jordy Lopez Funes who went 7-0 with 6(!) pins and one decision. Other outstanding performances include Senior Marcelo Pozo for also going 7-0, Freshman Charlie McGinity for going 4-2, and sophomore Dom Vejcik for going 4-3. Congratulations go out to McGinity, Freshmen Alex Torres and Isaac Cook, Sophomore Sebastian Jaldin and Seniors Wilmer Chinchilla, Frank Cordova-Ferrufino and Nate Quisbert for all gaining their first pins of their careers. The varsity resumes competition on Saturday, 12/17 at Woodson at the Cavalier Classic.

SWIM/DIVE, Carmen Lucas:

Swim & Dive had an awesome win for both the boys and girls’ teams last Saturday over Justice HS. Boys won 218-91, girls won 156-153. We are heading into break with one more meet against Lewis on Friday 12/16, which is also our Alumni Night!

INDOOR TRACK, Phil Harris:

This Week the indoor track team prepares for two big competitions. One in Virginia Beach where Miles Lanham, Noah Williams, Rakan Aladi, and the 4x200 relays competes for state qualifying times. The other is at Episcopal HS where Kiera Dalrymple, Pamela Moura, and the Nagle twins lead the girls squad.

CHOIRDirector Pat Vaughn:

Annandale Choirs Winter Concert “Gaudete” was a Huge Success

On Tuesday, December 13, the choirs at Annandale HS presented an eclectic mix of holiday favorites to a crowd of over 500 in Watson Auditorium.

Atom Chorale, Men’s Chorale, Chamber and Annandale Singers performed with excellence and great poise. The choirs were accompanied by Mrs. Workman on the piano, Mrs. Ray on the harp, Ms. Crowley on flute and the AHS Percussion Ensemble. And the highlight of the night was our special guest who dressed up like the Grinch – our own Mr. DeRose!

A great night was had by all in attendance!

THEATRE, Director Katie Brunberg:

Annandale Theatre Company has been hard at work blocking, choreographing, and learning music for their Winter musical, Firebringer. We are so excited to have alumna Amanda Weaver directing! Meanwhile Theatre 3 & 4 students have been preparing for the VHSL One-Act competition. It’s going to be an eventful January for AHS Theatre.

Athletic Training Wrap

Our Athletic Trainers, Ryan Hughes and Kathy Ayers, work really hard behind the scenes of our Athletic events and they would like to share some tips and advice they give the student-athletes at Annandale High School everyday.

TIP OF THE WEEK

What you eat and drink after the game is just as vital as before and during. For ideal recovery, eat or drink something within 15 minutes of finishing a practice or game. Examples are: 20 oz. sports drinks, 2 handfuls of trail mix or dry cereal, 2 granola bars, a package of peanut butter crackers, or a small bag of pretzels.
