Principal's Message

Dear KJMS Families,

Can you believe that this is the last NYC for 2022? This year has flown by for many, and for others, 2023 may be a welcome change. Wherever you land on this issue, we wish you a happy and safe winter break over the next two weeks.

We want to take a moment to extend a special thank you to the families who sent in over 100 desserts for our annual holiday staff raffle! Many of the desserts were homemade with everything from breakfast favorites to both huge and small dessert trays. Our teachers who are traveling found things to munch on in the car, while those who are hosting are happy to have one more item checked off of their to-do list. YOU made this happen! Thank you for being so gracious and thoughtful during this busy time of year.

This past week, we had our first inclement weather day with a two-hour delay. Several families called with questions about this since it has been a while since we had a delay. Hopefully, the following guidelines will help if this happens again.

  • A two-hour delay means that all buses will arrive two hours after the normal arrival time. Be aware, as traffic may be different, they may be a little later than exactly two hours.
  • Parents who utilize drop-off at door 1 should stay in their cars until unloading begins at 9:10 AM. We cannot allow earlier entry as staff are still arriving, and the traffic monitor needs to arrive on Jermantown.
  • Once students arrive, they will attend their odd or even days classes they had normally scheduled, but classes will be shortened. We have the delay schedule on StudentVue.
  • Lunch is served on delayed openings.

As an FYI, the first 5 full-snow days will be observed as “traditional snow days.” This means that students will not have any virtual learning or academic expectations on those first 5 snow days. The link explains what would happen if we surpass the 5 days.

As an Away for the Day school, we have one final request to help all our students school: please remind your students to turn off their Apple AirDrop or Android Nearby Share features in school and on the bus. This prevents unwanted and unnecessary items from being “dropped” onto your child’s device without their permission or knowledge. Thanks for helping with this!

It is that time again for our KJMS teams to offer you an opportunity to meet online for a “Virtual Coffee” before the end of the semester in January. Please access this link to a survey that will give you a chance to ask a question for us to be better prepared with information. When we return in the new year, an invitation with details for your “Virtual Coffee” will be sent in an email at least a week beforehand.

Enjoy the next two weeks with your students! We can not wait to see them SOAR in 2023!

Happy Holidays,

Tammy Silipigni

Celebrations in our Community - December

18-26: Chanukah: Happy Chanukah to all in our community who celebrate! This Festival of Lights is an 8-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple, and the miracle of a small quantity of oil that lit the Temple's menorah for 8 days. #OurFCPS

19-Jan. 2:  Winter Break:  As a reminder, winter break will be held December 19 to January 2. To help make sure you and your children have a restful break, we have asked that no homework be assigned during this time. Teachers may assign long-range assignments in the weeks ahead of the break, allowing students to practice time management skills, but no assignments will be due immediately following the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in the new year. Classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

25: Christmas: A very Merry Christmas to those in our community who celebrate! Christmas is an annual holiday that commemorates the birth of Jesus, and is celebrated in many unique ways across the U.S. and the world. #OurFCPS

26-1: Kwanzaa: Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. Wishing a joyous Kwanzaa to all in our community who celebrate. #OurFCPS

Speed Cameras Target School Zone Safety

On December 6, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to launch a pilot program that will have 10 speed monitoring devices (speed cameras) installed throughout the county. These cameras will be in nine school zones and one construction zone. Thanks to our county partners for helping to improve the safety of our students and staff.

Studies show that speed camera enforcement is effective in improving safety by reducing speeding, accidents, and injuries. Read more about the school zone speed camera pilot program.
