Happy Holidays From Bryant High School

Happy Holidays From Bryant HS

Hello Bryant families,

We had an exciting and eventful month of December and would like to share with you what we did!

On Thursday December 8th, students participated in our annual Holiday Market. Each student was able to pick one blanket and another gift item from an array of choices including hoodies, makeup, skincare, toys, and sports equipment. After students selected their items they stopped in the commons for some hot chocolate/abuelita and cookies before going into the auditorium for a movie. During the movie ten raffle tickets were drawn to distribute $25 dollar gifts from Chick-fil-A,, Starbucks, and Chiptole. Congratulations to the lucky winners!

As a reminder, we always welcome family members to stop by for a visit with our family liaison, Zuery Sanatana, who joined our Bryant High School community last month in November. She is able to take parents to the pantry located downstairs which offers various food, hygiene, and personal care items for those in need. We recently installed a washer and dryer which families can also use during their visit. Please contact Zeury at 703-660-2059 or via email at zesantanacar@fcps.edu to make an appointment. As an added bonus, she is bilingual in Spanish and English!

Art Field Trip

The Holiday Market was not the only fun this month! Students in Ms. Bowser’s English 9/English Language Development class took a field trip to the National Gallery of Art in D.C. There students saw exhibitions on Renaissance painters, Black artists of the American South, and photography from Spain among other special installations.

Bryant High School has its own artist being recognized as well! Our art teacher, Mrs. Julie Smith Gilmore, who teaches Studio Art levels 1, 2 and 3 was recognized by Fairfax County Public Schools at a Teachers Art Exhibition at Lorton Workhouse Art Center. Mrs. Smith Gilmore took her moms’ texts (in Korean) and transported them onto a ceramic vessel.  We are so proud of Mrs. Smith Gilmore’s accomplishments and are grateful to have her here with us.

In between all of the fun, students have been working hard preparing for and taking their Standards of Learning assessments (SOLs) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and their Career/Technical Education Certification. This month students took English, math, and social studies tests which included reading, writing, earth science, algebra 1, geometry, world history, and US/VA history. We wish our students the best of luck as they continue testing into January. Economic and Personal Finance students also took the W!SE financial literacy exam.

To provide students with a break in between all of their hard work we continued our recently implemented Friday activity day which we do twice a month. On these days students have a shortened class time to provide them with the opportunity to participate in various activities. These include yoga, yearbook, open gym, movie club, chess, and karaoke. This is a fun, interactive bonding experience for both students and teachers.

James, a former student, visits Bryant

A former Bryant graduate, James Wrobeh, visited Bryant and shared his experiences as a student at Virginia State University. He is a role model for students and staff that hard work and a great attitude pays off!

We hope everyone has a happy holiday season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
