The Lion’s Roar

December 9, 2022

Lane ended its observation of Inclusive Schools Week with special activities in P.E. on Thursday and Friday called "Walk in My Shoes." These empathy-building activities are interactive and hands-on and enable students to experience the perspectives of individuals with visual, communication, fine motor, and sensory differences, along with individuals with food allergies and English Language Learners. The goals of the program are to increase knowledge, shift perspectives, and teach the importance of supportive and inclusive environments as we all experience the world in our own unique way. Students were engaged, challenged, determined, frustrated, and enlightened all at the same time – which means the event was very successful! Thank you to all of the volunteers and families who donated supplies. It wouldn't have been possible without your support!

Winter Break Is Coming Next Week!

Don’t forget that school and the office will be CLOSED Monday, December 19th through Monday, January 2nd for Winter Break. The last day before the break – Friday, December 16th – will be a regular full day of school, with dismissal at 4:05 p.m. as usual. School will reopen on Tuesday, January 3rd at the regular time. Please make sure you have these dates on your calendar.

We understand that there are many events happening at this time of year. Please remember that if you have to pick your child up early for any reason it’s important to send a note or e-mail to your child’s teacher that morning. This helps ensure that your child will be ready to leave the classroom when you arrive at school to pick him or her up. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Full-Time Advanced Academics Referrals Due Thursday, December 15th! Quick Review Guide Available

If you wish to refer your child for full-time Advanced Academics Program (AAP) placement, don’t forget that you must complete the referral form and accompanying documentation and email it to Lane’s Advanced Academics Resource Teacher Linda Simon at lesimon@fcps.edu no later than Thursday, December 15th at 11:59 p.m. No referrals will be accepted after this time.

Please let Ms. Simon know in advance if you plan to refer your child, even though you have until December 15th to submit the referral. This allows her to prepare paperwork to accompany the referral.

Resources are available to help with completing the referral form.

Please contact Ms. Simon if you have questions.

Parent Advocacy Handbook

Parent Advocacy Handbook

The Parent Advocacy Handbook is for parents and guardians -- a child’s first teacher and advocate. It is believed that parents and guardians should advocate and support their children’s academic, social, and emotional growth from preschool through high school, and beyond.

Information and resources within the handbook are designed to help parents and guardians:

  • Learn about their rights and responsibilities as an FCPS parent or guardian.
  • Learn more about what is going on in the student's school.
  • Gain skills to advocate for your student at school.
  • Learn more how to monitor and help your student at home.
  • Find extra help and resources.

The handbook contains answers to the many questions parents may have about the school system and how they can best advocate for their student at the various stages of their school experience.

Translations are available in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Spanish.

Preparing for Winter Weather

In case you missed it last week, here’s a reminder of FCPS’ inclement weather procedures. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will hold virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous (live) instruction following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule which includes a two-hour delay.
Consider bookmarking FCPS' Weather Cancellation Procedures to stay informed in case of winter weather or other emergency situations.

ESSER III Community Conversation on December 13th

Thanks to everyone who provided input in October on ESSER III funding–federal funding which was allocated to FCPS to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on students and student learning. Community feedback indicated that there is a general unawareness of the impact of ESSER funding and a perceived lack of communication around how the funds are being used.

To help address this, Superintendent Reid and Sloan Presidio, chief academic officer, will host a Community Conversation on ESSER on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:30 p.m., at the Gatehouse Administration Building in the Café. Please stay tuned for more details. Visit BoardDocs for a detailed update on ESSER.
