Spotlight on ST Math and Lexia

Classes Recognized for ST Math Puzzle Completion

ST Math

ST Math is a component of our instructional program at Dranesville. Students work daily to complete puzzles that are assigned based on their grade level journey. Students learn through challenging puzzles, non-routine problem solving, and formative feedback.

Our Goal Directed and Resilient mathematicians set daily, weekly, and monthly usage and puzzle completion goals. As students and classes meet and exceed goals, we celebrate together! Pictured above, Mrs. Geyer's class is recognized as the primary ST Math class of the month and receive a visit from our Math Resource Teacher and JiJi the penguin will join their class for the month.

In ST Math®, the puzzles start off simple and then get more challenging as your student progresses. If they encounter a difficult puzzle, they may ask you for your help. Don’t feel like you have to give your student the right answer. Allow them to experience productive struggle.

Here are some questions that you can ask your student to help them stay motivated:

• Describe what you see on the screen.
• What have you tried to do to solve the puzzle?
• What do you think you need to do to solve the puzzle?
• Describe the strategy that you are going to try.
• What do you think is going to happen when you click the Go Button?
• Describe what you see after you try your strategy. Was it what you expected?
• How does this compare to what you thought would happen?
• What did you learn from the animated feedback?
• What do you know now to help you with future puzzles?

Students Develop Reading Skills with Daily Use of Lexia

This year, all students at Dranesville are using Lexia® Core5® Reading, a fun computer-based program. The activities in Core5 support and build on our classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Here’s how Lexia Core5 Reading works:

Lexia

• Your child began Core5 at a starting point that fits their needs and works in online activities throughout the week.
• Online activities include direct instruction and feedback as your child learns new skills.
• Progress and performance in the program is reported so teachers can provide help when needed.
• Paper-and-pencil activities are also used for practice and may be done in school or brought home.
• Achievement certificates are presented to students every month to celebrate success and to show progress in the program.

Online Tutoring Available for All FCPS Students

Tutor.com video

Did you know? Students who’ve used Tutor.com have provided positive feedback. Unless they’ve been opted out, students can access Tutor.com through Schoology. Every session is personalized to meet the needs of the student from remedial to advanced levels. Sessions focus on conceptual learning and critical thinking—not quick answers.

Questions not answered in the posted resources on FCPS’ Tutor.com webpage may be sent to onlinetutoring@fcps.edu.
