bodhi

Bodhi Day, Thursday, December 8, was the Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), experienced enlightenment, also known as bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. Learn more about Bodhi Day in this video from the Miami Children’s Museum.

Traffic - WFES Neighborhoods

We know that due to our renovation process many families are seeking alternate locations to drop off students nearer to the Wolf Den (quads). Please be mindful of our WFES neighbors by not parking in front of driveways or driving on their property. Forest Street is particularly narrow and parking on this street can have a big impact on the safe flow of traffic.

SNOW Days

snow

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning.

  • Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction starting at 10:30 AM. A delayed start will give staff time to adjust their plans to a virtual format.
  • Students will begin bringing their FCPS provided devices to and from school following winter break. We will use zoom as our platform for virtual instruction. We will be practicing with students at school and will send home additional information about supporting your child at home.

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in weCare@school, bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

Supporting WFES Students in Need

giftcard

We have some families that could use some extra support in the stretch from late November to January as a part of our caring community. If you are interested in supporting, please consider donating a gift card (Walmart, Target, grocery store) these will be distributed to identified families by our school counseling team.

Score Reporting To Families

For the academic screenings that students complete in the fall, score report letters will be generated by FCPS, not each individual school. Most reports can be found in ParentVUE/SIS.

  • VRKP grades PreK-K will be sent via U.S. Mail before winter break
  • iReady grades 1-3 will be sent via U.S. Mail before Thanksgiving
  • iReady grades 4-6 will be posted via SIS ParentVUE before winter break
  • Fall VGA scores will be mailed by FCPS to parents the week of December 5
  • Fall CogAT scores were sent home in the Wednesday Folders on November 30.
  • NEW: Fall SEL Screener reports are scheduled to be mailed by FCPS in early January

Axolotl AirBnB Request

AXOS

Dear Parents/Students,

As you know the STEAM room has a pair of Axolotls named Crystal and Rocky (Aka The Rock). They have been doing well for the last two months, but need your help during the break.

We are looking for a family (that is not going anywhere over the break) to watch the pair of Axolotls in their AirBnB household. The family must be willing to:

  1. Hand feed live worms daily (with a tweezer) to Crystal and Rocky.
  2. Monitor tank temperature (must be around 60 degrees and have a small fan that runs to keep it cool).
  3. Monitor to make sure fans and bubblers are operating correctly,
  4. Resist temptation from touching the Axolotls.

Mr. Gray will give you the tank, water and all materials related to watching the Axolotls successfully.

If you are interested in hosting our Axolotls at your AirBNB please fill out information in the google form below by Monday, 12/12,  I will contact you if your family is selected.

There might be other opportunities to watch the Axolotls in 2023.

Thanks for your interest.
