National Special Education Day is recognized each year on December 2. It commemorates President Gerald Ford’s signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975. We celebrate our teachers and staff who serve and support our students with special needs!

Bodhi Day, Thursday, December 8, is the Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), experienced enlightenment, also known as “bodhi” in Sanskrit and Pali. Learn more about Bodhi Day in this video from the Miami Children’s Museum.

Edison Cappie Theatrical Review Published

Cappies

The “Cappies” celebrates theatre programs in FCPS with students critiquing student plays. For the recent performance of She Kills Monsters: Young Adventurers Edition by Mount Vernon High School, a review by EHS junior Anneli Sample is being forwarded to FCPS Community News.

Anneli wrote: The entire production perfectly fused geek culture, relationships, loss, and hilarity. The cast and crew put their all into bending the laws of what is possible in reality, which left a profound impact and gave viewers ideas to consider such as what life is and how to keep the memory of the deceased alive. Congratulations Anneli!

Test Zoom Lesson for Students

On Wednesday, December 7, Advisory teachers will run a test session on Zoom to prepare students for possible virtual learning due to inclement weather. This will ensure that both teacher and student know how to access Zoom sessions in Schoology.  One of the best ways you can help your student is to periodically remind them to restart their computers and bring their laptop and charger home from school every day.

As noted in the parent newsletter from FCPS this week:

"FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay)."

Parent Advocacy Handbook

The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) has created a Parent Advocacy Handbook to provide information and support to families as they navigate the FCPS system for their children. It is designed to be particularly useful for families who may be less familiar with such a large school division and/or with schooling in the U.S.

it is also available on the FCPS website in English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Korean at:  https://www.fcps.edu/parentadvocacyhandbook.

Please contact our parent liaison, Luisa Espinoza, at leespinoza@fcps.edu for more information.

Don't forget - PTSA No Fuss Fundraiser

We are grateful for how much has been raised in our "No Fuss" Fall Fundraiser. Remember with this fundraiser there's no fuss!! We're not asking you to sell candy or buy wrapping paper; we're just asking for you to donate. After two years of Covid, and the PTSA not doing a lot of fundraising, we really need to replenish our funds. These funds are needed to help provide the programs the PTSA offers the whole school community. Please consider donating now. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.
