Important Dates

  • December 5th: Revive Training at 5:30 in rooms 316 & 317 & PTA Board Meeting at 6:30 in the library

Announcement

  • We are excited to share that our extended cafeteria and Springbank Connector is completed! Beginning Monday we will be “under one roof.” 
  • We will now become a fully inside contained school; no trailers, no need to walk outside during class exchange, and a cafeteria big enough to accommodate our lunches.
  • Please see Dr. Millard’s email sent earlier this afternoon for more information.

Poinsetta Pick Up: Thank you for supporting the PTA, you can pick up poinsettias this Saturday, December 3rd from 11:30 AM – 2 PM in Hollin Hills pool parking lot.

Student Safety and Wellness Office, will be our guest speaker.  You won't want to miss this!  Elizabeth is a wealth of knowledge and information.

School News

Congratulations to all of our fall athletes who were honored at the fall sports banquet this week.  Arleigh Hanson and Charlie Armstrong received the Scholar Athlete Award. 228 West Potomac student athletes earn a B+ or higher and three varsity teams, field hockey, golf and volleyball, had every player earn B+ or higher.  Congrats to the many players who earned All District and All Region honors.  Congrats to Arleigh Hanson for her signing to play volleyball for the Naval Academy and to Samantha Dorn for her signing to play volleyball for Christopher Newport.

15th Annual FCPS Artist Teacher Exhibition

  • We are excited to share that this year WPHS has THREE Art Teachers who are being featured at this year’s FCPS Artist Teacher Exhibition. Congratulations to Kristina Nosal, Adam Sanchez, and Amy Stoll!
  • This year’s exhibition is titled TextMessages: the Art of Con{text}. You can view the exhibit through Sunday at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton.

VJCL Latin Convention

  • Earlier this month, WPHS Latin students attended the VJCL Conference! Congrats to those recognize with awards at the conference.
    • Creative Arts (Latin Oratory & Storytelling) —a fantastic 2nd place showing for Claire Jagow!
    • Graphic Arts – many awards were won for various projects: painting, pen & ink, children’s book, ornament, watercolor
    • Many students placed in the Academics Category which includes Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Derivatives, Vocabulary, Mythology, Roman Life, and Geography.
    • Laura Altwies, 11th grade - won a prestigious Sweepstakes Award

Senior Families:

  • SENIOR PICTURE UPDATE
    • If you were not able to schedule your senior’s portrait session, additional dates have been added on January 17, 19, and 20. Appointments can be made using this LINK.
  • GRADUATION CAP & GOWN ORDER
    • Please make sure that your senior has completed the order form for their graduation cap and gown. Students need to be logged into their school email account in order to complete survey. Parents are unable to complete the survey for the students. The form is set to collect their school email address and send a copy of the responses to them. It would be a good idea to save that email! You will only be allowed to complete the form one time to avoid duplicates in the data.
      • You will need to know the following information to complete the form:
        • Student ID
        • Advisory teacher
        • Weight (in pounds)
        • Height (in feet and inches)
        • The survey will CLOSE on Thursday, December 8. Every Senior must complete the survey by that date.

College and Career Center Updates

  • Enrichment programs are an opportunity for students to explore their interests and learn new skills.  Enrichment programs that encompass a variety of topics are posted throughout the year in Naviance for students and families to explore. Examples of some of the enrichment programs currently posted are highlighted below.  Go to Naviance>Colleges>Research Colleges>Enrichment Programs to see a full list of the current programs posted, including additional information and application instructions for the programs highlighted below.
  • HIGH SCHOOL HOLIDAY INTERNSHIPS | This Way Onward
    • The Gap Family of Brands is proud to present its new High School Internship program, This Way Onward with Old Navy. The High School Internship Program is for high school students at least 16 years of age that are looking for real-world experiences in the fashion industry. The Internship Program will offer students the opportunity to gain relevant work experience while contributing to a global brand. Interns are eligible for future hiring opportunities and staff discounts at all brands in the GAP family.  Interested students should apply as soon as possible.
  • The NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (NGA) has several opportunities currently available.  Interested students must apply by the December 10, 2022 deadline. 
  • HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM | NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (NGA)
    • The High School Internship Program is for high school juniors and seniors that are looking for real-world experience. The Internship Program will offer students the opportunity to gain relevant work experience while contributing to an important and purposeful mission. Participants who graduate are eligible to apply for scholarship programs (i.e., the Undergraduate Scholarship Program, GEO-Scholar) offered by the NGA.
  • UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM | NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-INTELLIGENCE AGENCY (NGA)
    • The Undergraduate Scholarship Program is based on the Stokes Scholarship Program and offers students tuition reimbursement and an exciting and purposeful internship opportunity while pursuing their bachelor’s degree. Scholars will attend a qualifying educational institution full-time and report to an NGA facility during their summer breaks to work alongside experienced NGA staff and GEOINT experts. Upon graduation, successful interns may be offered the opportunity to non-competitively convert to full-time employment.
  • GEO SCHOLAR PROGRAM | NATIONAL GEOSPATIAL-NTELLIGENCE AGENCY (NGA)
    • The GEO-Scholar Program offers students tuition reimbursement and an exciting and purposeful internship opportunity while pursuing their bachelor’s degree. Scholars will attend a qualifying educational institution full-time and report to an NGA facility during their summer breaks to work alongside experienced NGA staff and GEOINT experts. Upon graduation, successful interns may be offered the opportunity to non-competitively convert to full-time employment. 
  • The Children’s Science Center’s goal is to inspire a love of STEM. They have a variety of interesting programs for students to explore.  Programs currently accepting applications include:
    • Latina SciGirls Internship (HS) Spring 2023
      • Latina SciGirls (LSG), the PBS-designed program showcases STEM learning in Latinas through the incorporation of hands-on activities, multi-media tools, and exposure to accomplished Latina STEM mentors. Over the course of nine weeks, thirty participants in grades 3-6 from a Northern Virginia elementary school will convene to investigate STEM topics ranging from recycling to animal habitats to forensic science. The LSG Interns will work alongside lab staff interacting with LSG participants, facilitating experiments, and leading groups and individuals through explorations of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics concepts.  Applications are due by 5:00 pm on December 16, 2022.
    • Animal Husbandry Internship (HS)Rolling Application
      • The Animal Husbandry Internship will provide a well-rounded experience for individuals actively pursuing a career in animal care and education. The internship will cover topics including best practices in animal welfare, zoonotic diseases, training, AZA/SSP information, USDA requirements, recording keeping, etc. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Walk-In registration for mocks ($28.00) available as space allows.

The Digital SAT is coming, but will it affect your testing plan?  Current juniors don’t need to think about it at all! But, if you’re a sophomore (or younger), you’ll want to know about the digital test. 

First Impressions of the New Digital SAT  by Jed Applerouth, PhD

With the release of the first full-length digital adaptive SAT on College Board’s new testing app, Bluebook, students and educators can now get a clearer sense of the SAT of the future.
