General Information
The Center: Walk-in Tutoring, December 7
On Wednesday, December 7 from 3:00-4:30pm, The Center will be offering free walk-in tutoring for midterm preparation. This will be held in the Lecture Hall and there will be help for all students in all subjects!
The Center: College Essay Workshop, December 14
On Wednesday, December 14 from 3:00-4:00pm, The Center welcomes all seniors to get feedback on their college essays as the regular decision deadline approaches. This session will be held in room 1108.
Assignments Over Winter Break
So that all students may enjoy winter break and rest and recharge, no assignments will be due, nor assessments given on January 3-4.
Prearranged Absences
During this time of year we tend to see an increase in student absences. To help out our attendance office we are asking families to plan ahead, when they are able, for prearranged absences. All of our attendance protocols and procedures can be found on our website, including a link to our prearranged absence form.
College Board Accommodations
Students who have an IEP or 504 do not automatically have College Board accommodations on SATs, PSATs, and AP Exams. Students who have been approved for College Board accommodations in previous years do not need to apply again. If you wish to apply for College Board accommodations for Spring 2023 AP exam administrations must complete the linked forms below and email to Oakton by this Friday, December 9. All of the paperwork below is to be given to Rochelle Sherrill, SSD Coordinator, at rlsherrill@fcps.edu. Each of the following must be completed:

December Virtual Parent Coffee - Course Registration
Our December parent coffee will be held virtually on Tuesday, December 13 at 10:00am. It will be focused on student class registration for the 2023-2024 school year. Registration will begin for students in January so we will review the process and all the resources that will be available to students and families in making their course selections. We would also like to encourage families to save January 5 on your calendars. We will be hosting an in-person Curriculum Night. Parents and students will be welcome to come and stop by teacher tables to learn more about classes before enrolling.
A link will be sent out the morning of the event for those interested in attending.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving
All students enrolled in Classroom Driver Education during the 2022-2023 school year must attend an in-person Partners for Safe Teen Driving (PSTD). The presentation is connected to successful classroom instruction and must be completed to receive a DEC-District 8 card (pink card). The parent-teen traffic safety presentation (PSTD) will be offered multiple times during the school year at Oakton. Students and their parents/guardians should plan to attend the presentation at Oakton at your earliest convenience.
All PSTDs begin promptly. Late admission will not be allowed.

These sessions are intended for Sophomores. Juniors and Seniors can attend a session through Adult and Community Education.

Schedule Changes
At this time, we are accepting schedule change requests. School counselors and administrators will try to accommodate course change requests, however, due to staffing restraints, classes are extremely limited. Students interested in a schedule change should see their school counselor for the "Schedule Change Request Form". All forms need to have detailed information from student, parent, school counselor and teacher prior to being reviewed by the administration.

Service Learning Enrichment Opportunities
In an effort to highlight enrichment experiences that can connect service learning for students, FCPS has put together a brief one page document with various enrichment experiences. All of these experiences are posted in the Naviance Enrichment Database, but we also wanted to highlight them for our community in case any students might be interested.

All students at Oakton are encouraged to use X2VOL via their Naviance account to record and continue to record all Service Learning completed throughout the school year. Health and Wellness Updates
The Secret of Sleep and Performance Workshop
During the next few weeks, our winter athletes and performing art groups will be invited to join Dr. Tracy Davenport on for a workshop on The Secret of Sleep and Performance during return periods. Students will spend an hour learning the top five secrets to better sleep and performance.
Dr. Tracy Davenport is a recognized expert in the field of health and performance. Covering the latest health research, she has had more than 1000 articles published over the last two decades. She was a co-developer of U.S. Rowing’s Coaching Education Program and has worked with athletes and coaches across the country explaining the latest science around sleep to help them achieve optimal performance. She holds a B.S. in Engineering, an M.A. in Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Human Growth and Development and was named the Graduate Student of the Year at the University of Delaware, received the President’s Medal from Washington College, the Woman of the Year from the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, and the Minority Achievement Award from the Maryland State Department of Education. She lives on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and is a long-time wife of a college coach and mother to two athletes, one in college football and one on a NASCAR pit crew. She loves to work with trainers, coaches, and athletes at all levels and can be found at Tracyshealthyliving.com or on Instagram @drtracydavenport. Some of her previous clients include Towson University, UMBC, UMES, Ohio State University, University of Maryland, and Amazon.

Safety and Security Updates
Anonymous Tip Line Puts Safety First
If you or your child have concerns or information relating to feeling unsafe in any way at school, we encourage you to reach out to a member of the security or administrative team so that we may quickly address the issue. Students and parents may also utilize the FCPS Office of Safety and Security safety tip line, that you can access anonymously online, by text (888-777; Keyword TIP FCPS), or by phone (571-423-2020).
If your tip is an emergency and immediate assistance is necessary, please dial 911.
Students, staff, and community members should report school safety issues such as threats, unsafe or dangerous situations, illegal drug activity, theft, gang activity, the existence of weapons, vandalism, and concerns about student wellness. Tip line users may identify themselves or remain anonymous.
Concerns that do not impact the safety of our schools—concerns or information about programs, regulations, or policies—can be sent to the FCPS ombudsman online, at 571-423-4014, or ombudsman@fcps.edu.

Parents who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese can call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS and to receive support if they are having difficulty communicating with their children's schools due to a language barrier.

The FCPS Parent Resource Center offers a wide variety of information and resources to support the success of all students. This includes monthly workshops and webinars. More information can be found on the FCPS website, including registration information.

Morning Meeting and Responsive Advisory Meeting: Building Positive Classroom Communities through Social and Emotional Learning
Join us to hear about how teachers and school staff are building positive schoolwide and classroom communities through social and emotional learning.
During this session, families will:
- Learn about the evidence-based Responsive Classroom practices of Morning Meeting and Responsive Advisory Meeting.
- Understand how teachers are using these practices to engage students in learning that is challenging, developmentally appropriate, and supportive of the whole child.
- Learn new tips so you can continue these responsive practices at home.
