Principal's Message

Hello Shrevewood Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! There were lots of smiles on Monday morning as we returned to the building from the break. We continue to be grateful for the amazing things that are happening here. Our 2nd graders enjoyed their first field trip to Huntly Meadows Park, while 5th graders explored at Green Spring Gardens. Thank you to all of our parent chaperones who supported these learning experiences.

We are packing the next two weeks before Winter Break with lots of learning and fun activities. We will have a Winter Spirit week during the week of December 12th. More information about the spirit days can be found later in the Newsletter.

Next Thursday, FCPS will be observing Bodhi Day. A blessed Bodhi Day to all who celebrate.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Assessment Reporting Information

We hope you have enjoyed learning about your child’s progress during our 1st quarter conferences.  Your child’s teacher shared a variety of assessment information that will also be available to you for your personal records:

  • VRKP results for grade K will be sent via U.S. Mail before winter break
  • iReady grades 1-3 were sent via U.S. Mail before Thanksgiving
  • iReady grades 4-6 will be posted via SIS ParentVUE before winter break
  • VGA results for grades 3-6 will be shared before winter break, pending score interpretation guidance from the Virginia Department of Education

At Shrevewood, we believe our children are more than any given test score.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher with questions regarding academic progress throughout the school year.  You can find more information on assessments here, or by contacting our School Test Coordinator, Katie Vandawalker.

Inclusive Schools Week- December 5-9

Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors. The week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students, and parents to discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children. This year, the Inclusive Schools Week’s theme is “Unity Within Our Community.”

Winter Spirit Week!

Virtual Snow Days & MiFi Devices

FCPS has announced updates to its inclement weather procedures for the 2022-23 school year.

Like last year, the first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days.” These five days may occur consecutively due to a single weather event or may take place as several individual events.

Once these five days have been taken, FCPS will use the flexibility provided by the General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, wherever possible, to maintain continuity of learning.

During weather events, FCPS must consider power outages, technical connection issues, and whether students have access to devices that they may not have taken home the night before.

Allowing five days for inclement weather events allows time to plan ahead as best as possible to ensure everything needed to continue to serve our students and families is in place. This includes allowing for pick-up times for devices, clearing parking lots so those devices can be collected, as well as allowing teachers time to reformat their classes for a virtual format.

MiFi (Mobile Hotspot) Check-out

Schools have mobile hotspot devices (MiFi) for checkout to students who have no internet access at home. These MiFis are intended to support school-related activities only, and include internet filtering that prevents recreational uses, including Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services. If your student needs a MiFi device to complete school work at home, please fill out this Google Form. Our school team will be in touch regarding distribution of these devices.

Band & Chorus Concert

Our 6th grade Band and 5th and 6th grade Chorus will have their Winter concert on Tuesday, December 13th, at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. Please join us for some music selections that the students have been working hard on to perform. If you have any other questions, please contact Mrs. Thomas, our band teacher, or Mrs. Anuszkiewicz, our Chorus director.

iReady Winter Testing

Students in grades 1-6 will participate in the math and reading iReady assessment (also known as the universal screener) for the winter window. More information about the assessment can be found on the FCPS Universal Screener Parent Notification webpage. For questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

Next week in our Positivity Project lessons in Morning Meeting, we will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.

Questions that you can discuss with your child include:

  • How have you experienced help from others? How did it make you feel?
  • What is one way that you can help out someone who is struggling?

“Giving back is as good for you as it is for those you are helping, because giving gives you purpose.” -Goldie Hawn

In case you missed it in FCPS This Week, the school division shared updates on the following topics:

    • FCPS Calendar Survey
