Toys for Tots
Cedar Lane will participate in Toys for Tots again this year. Students who participate making posters, decorating the donation boxes, or brining in toys will receive service-learning hours. We are actively accepting new, unwrapped toys for any age children now. The last day for receiving the toys will be December 10th for the Marines to get the toys distributed.
FCPS Snow Day Policy
In the event of inclement weather, the first 5 days of missed instruction will not be made up. On the 6th day, we will move to synchronous instruction using Zoom through Schoology. We will follow a two-hour delay schedule. Cedar Lane’s Snow Day schedule can be accessed here: http://bit.ly/3XgIJVe
IEP Palooza
On Saturday, December 3 from 9am to 12noon, Fairfax Co SEPTA is hosting "IEP PALOOZA." It will have an IEP demonstration, break-out rooms and a resource fair. The event will be held at Annandale HS. Parents, staff and students are welcome to attend. Materials are available in multiple languages and interpreters will be available with notice. Calendar Survey: Make Your Voice Heard!
FCPS parents/caregivers, employees, and students in grades 7-12 were emailed an invitation to take the 2023-24 School Year Calendar Survey. This survey is part of an annual process to gather input from the community to help develop the school year calendar for the following year. Please complete the survey by Thursday, December 1, and make your voice heard! For more information, please visit http://bit.ly/3hQvNoK
Save The Date Senior Portraits
Cedar Lane will conduct the annual Senior Photo Day on Wednesday, December 7th at the school. All Seniors who expect to be a part of the Cedar Lane Class of 2023 are encouraged to participate in this important event. Seniors will be asked to sign up for a specific time to have their photo taken on December 7th. More information will be sent out as the date gets closer. Lifetouch will have an alternative site for photo sessions. That information will be provided on request.
For any questions about school photos, please contact Robb Metry at Cedar Lane School at rametry@fcps.edu or call the school at 703-208-2400.
Soda and Paint PBIS Activity
As part of our PBIS schoolwide activities, we will have a paint and soda event. Students will be hosted in the art room with an opportunity to paint a picture of ornaments.
Alcohol & The Holidays
The holidays usually involve family time, games, movies, food, and possibly drinks. The holidays may involve less family members this year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean less alcohol for some. Alcohol consumption has increased during the pandemic and when ABC stores were deemed essential it didn’t help lower those rates (ABC News, September 29, 2020). Many people are still trying to figure out how to navigate our “new normal” since a global pandemic wasn’t on our to-do list in 2020, but we encourage you to consider a few things during these trying times.
Questions to consider when drinking with your family:
- What message am I sending if I drink in excess around my underage child?
- Have I had conversations about responsible drinking with them?
- Are the conversations I have about alcohol realistic?
- Do my conversations with others reinforce alcohol use as a coping skill during stressful times?
- What messages am I sending my underage child if I allow them to drink with me or another adult in the house?
Info to consider:
“One-third of Fairfax County students (33.7%) reported drinking alcohol at least once in their lifetime, ranging from 18.8% of eighth-grade students to half of twelfth-grade students (49.4%). One in seven students (15.2%) reported drinking alcohol in the past month, ranging from 4.5% of eighth-grade students to 27.7% of twelfth-grade students.” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020)
“Female students reported higher rates of alcohol use in their lifetime (36.1% compared to 31.2% of male students), in the past month (17.1% and 13.1%, respectively), and binge drinking in the past two weeks (7.3% and 6.5%, respectively)” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020).
