AFTERSCHOOL NEWS & UPDATES

NO AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES or LATE BUS TRANSPORTATION:

There are two sessions, 2:30 – 3:30PM and 3:35 – 4:45PM following the 2:15-2:30PM Afterschool Transition in the Cafeteria. Students may stay for first or both sessions. Late Bus transportation is only available after second block at approx. 4:45PM on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Students may bring a snack from home or money to purchase snacks from the vending machines or school store.

STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO LEAVE SCHOOL GROUNDS & RETURN FOR LATE BUS or PICKUP.

STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THE FIELD or ANY SPACE WITOUT PERMISSION/SUPERVISION.

 

HOW DO STUDENTS SIGN UP?

A completed General Afterschool Registration Form (Student FCPS Google Account) is required prior to participation.  Afterschool Updates & Descriptions can be found below as well as in Schoology > Courses > All School > Materials:

AFTERSCHOOL ATTENDANCE Anytime a student stays after school for any reason they must sign in using our Afterschool Attendance form. This is not optional and helps us respond to parent inquiries and locate students quickly and accurately. Afterschool plans and expectations should be made at home (before school) for when students stay after. The after-school program being operated at this site is exempt from licensure as per §22.1-289.030 of the Code of Virginia and has no direct oversight by the Virginia Department of Education

 Into the Woods Musical Auditions take place November 28th-30th and December 1st!

 Voices of Now is an acting, writing, devising program for young artists provided by Arena Stage, D.C.’s oldest, largest producing theater. Voices of Now artists learn the tools of theater performance, such as movement, vocal expression and collaboration, by taking a series of workshops in the fall.  Students must participate in 1 of 2 Workshop Series in order to audition for the Ensemble, which meets from January through May at Kilmer.  Code Remix Use creative expression to bring beat-making and coding to life. Bring Laptop & Charger & Headphones to Workshop! May participate 1st, 2nd or Both Blocks after school. Spaces are limited!

To Bee or Not to Bee?!?  Kilmer Spelling Bee Interest Meeting in the Library on Thursday, December 8th (1st Block). The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational competition. The Bee’s purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

The 2023 Fairfax County Spelling Bee will be held on MARCH 19, 2023, 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Lake Braddock Secondary School, Burke, VA. The competition will be in-person, local health regulations permitting. The speller who wins the title of Fairfax County Spelling Bee Champion earns the right to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, to be held late May 2023.

Best Buddies - Kilmer MS Chapter Kilmer will be starting a Best Buddies chapter available to all interested students.  Students interested in Best Buddies will have the opportunity to foster friendships with other students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The program aims to ensure all students are embraced and included in our Kilmer community.  Joining Best Buddies means doing fun things with someone who needs a friend. Being a Best Buddy makes a huge difference for people with disabilities.  It can also make a big, positive impact on you, too!
