Hornet Happenings

Caring Community Curriculum Night

Thank you for attending our Caring Community and Curriculum Night!!!

Dear Halley Families,

We loved having a full five-day week with our Hornets!  It’s been a busy and productive time at school. Since there will be no newsletter next week, we want to share our gratitude for our students, staff, and families.  We are so incredibly lucky to be part of the caring culture that defines our Halley community.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with love and gratitude. Thank you for all your continued support and partnership at the Hornet Nation.

Blessings and Joy!

Mrs. Peerman, Mrs. Johnson-Tyler, and Mrs. Zamora

In the Hive, we Strive to help others!

holiday help image

In the Hive, we Strive to build a caring culture and support one another!  As we approach the fall and winter months and a season of many holidays, families often face increased stress and financial need.  Many families also are looking for ways to support others.

  • We are collecting gift cards to support Halley families in need during the holidays and throughout the school year.  Please consider donating a gift card, preferably to a grocery store, Walmart, or Target in any increment.  Gift cards can be dropped off in the front office in an envelope to the attention of one of our student services team or given to any member of the student services team (school counselors, social worker, or school psychologist) or one of the administrative team.

If your family is in need of extra support during the holiday season, please reach out to our Parent Liaison, Sandra Ramirez, at 703 551 5791 or our School Social Worker, Liz DeVoll, at 703-551-5789 to discuss available resources.

positivity project

Halley Is a Positivity Project School!  Thank you to our amazing PTO for partnering with us in this effort! Each month we will focus on a different character strength as we strive to be our best selves.

For the month of November, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Gratitude. Gratitude means you are aware of and thankful for good things that happen.

Gratitude is the quality of feelings and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship-strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”

Out of all 24-character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism. And, the great thing about gratitude is that it can be intentionally cultivated. Numerous studies have concluded that gratitude is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it gets -- and the more you’re able to reap its benefits.

To practice and encourage the character strength of gratitude with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.
