West Springfield Pyramid Challenge

The West Springfield Pyramid Challenge took place on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Washington Irving Middle School.

Approximately 50 students from Hunt Valley competed against fellow students from Cardinal Forest, West Springfield, Keene Mill, Sangster, Orange Hunt, and Rolling Valley elementary schools.

Principal Hightower, Assistant Principal Gibbs, and Hamilton the Hawk came out to cheer on our Hunt Valley Hawks. Hunt Valley placed sixth overall with 16 pts, including Hamilton's third place finish in the mascot race. Way to go Hamilton and all of the Hunt Valley Hawks who participated! Big thanks to David Hughes Orthodontics for their incredibly generous sponsorship and all the volunteers who made this a safe and fun event!

Just 15 days left in the Hunt Valley No Fuss Fundraiser – Help Hamilton Soar!

What do the Hunt Valley Fall Festival, Movie Nights (two more scheduled this year!), teacher reimbursements, and Spring Game Night have in common?

They are all sponsored by the Hunt Valley PTA.

These events are made possible thanks to the generous donations of our HVES community. Please help us keep these types of activities going by donating to the Hunt Valley No Fuss Fundraiser, which wraps up on Friday, Dec. 2.  Our goal is to raise $6,000; we currently have raised only…

If we reach our goal, Ms. Hightower has graciously agreed to let the kids decide between a few options what she will do on the student news as a reward. Will it be a pie to the face? Will it be a TikTok trend? Maybe a silly stringing? Something different? More details will come if we meet our goal by Dec. 2.

Give your attitude a boost with some Gratitude

November is all about giving thanks for the positive things in our lives. Therefore, this month give your attitude a boost with some gratitude.

What is gratitude? Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and showing appreciation. Gratitude helps you experience more positive emotions, enjoy good experiences, improve your physical and mental health, be more resilient against stress and adversity, and build stronger relationships.

Research shows that gratitude can:

  • Help you make friends. One study found that thanking a person you are newly acquainted with makes them more likely to seek a more lasting friendship with you.
  • Improve your physical health. Individuals who display gratitude report fewer aches and pains, a general feeling of wellness, more regular exercise, and more frequent checkups with their doctor than those who don’t.
  • Improve your psychological health. Grateful people enjoy higher levels of wellbeing and happiness and suffer from reduced symptoms of depression.
  • Enhance empathy and reduce aggression. Those who show their gratitude are less likely to seek out revenge against others and more likely to behave in a social manner, with sensitivity and empathy.
  • Improve your sleep. Practicing gratitude regularly can help you sleep longer and better.
  • Enhance your self-esteem. People who are grateful have increased self-esteem, partly due to their ability to appreciate other peoples’ accomplishments.
  • Increase in mental strength. Grateful people have an advantage in overcoming trauma and enhanced resilience, helping them to bounce back from highly stressful situations or experiences.

Some of the most common gratitude activities and exercises include:

  • Journaling (every day or week)
  • Gratitude jar (write things you are grateful for on little pieces of paper and put in jar)
  • Gratitude rock (carry around with you and think of something you are grateful for whenever you touch it)
  • Gratitude tree (made out of paper – good activity for kids)
  • Meditation
