Annual Book Fair is Coming Soon

November 30-December 9

The library will be a bookstore! 

Students will preview the book fair through their English classes starting November 30th, and will be open all school day and after school on Monday Dec. 5th and Wednesdays (Nov. 30th and Dec. 7th). Check to see if your teachers have wish lists available!

Merchandise can be purchased by cash, check or credit/debit card.  All proceeds from the book fair are used to purchase resources and supplies to make the library an even better place for our students. There will also be a candy cane/Jolly Rancher sale to benefit the Native Courtyard Garden fund.

The library, and garden thank you, for your support. Hope to see you there!

Cooper Model UN Team 

Conference at George Washington 

The Model UN Team had a great conference at GW this weekend. There were 32 delegates in attendance from Cooper, of those students six earned awards.

- Ryan Minton received the Best Delegate award for his position as Camille Charmoun in The Formation of the UAR committee.

-Sophia Robertson and Emma Zheng received Honorable Mention for their role as Czech Republic in the SPECPOL committee.

-Ray Zhao and Evan Bhatia received a verbal accommodation for their role as Central African Republic in the SPECPOL committee.

-Anoushka Sarathy received a verbal accommodation for her role as Bail Organa in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars crisis committee.


QuizBowl Team

The Cooper quiz bowl team participated in the Burleigh Manor Middle School (BMMS) Invitational in Ellicott City on Nov 5 and Cooper A took 3rd place and Cooper B took 4th place! Both teams qualified for the Middle School National Championship Tournament (MSNCT) to be held in Chicago May 2023! 

BMMS is the largest regional tournament with 42 middle school and elementary school teams. Burleigh Manor, last year's Academic Bowl national champion team, took 1st and 2nd place. Haughton, Ray and Orin also won individual awards for their stellar performance. Edward Guo, who is new to quiz bowl and had an impressive showing as an individual top scorer.

Coaches Estella, Randy, Jianghui, Mrs. Stanley and the Cooper Community are very proud of all of them!


AAP Level IV Parent Referrals

(7th grade only)

Parents/guardians of students in Grade 7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) for 2023-2024 may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to their Cooper school counselor no later than December 15, 2022

Forms for AAP Level IV referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for AAP Level IV services can be accepted

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at Cooper and is then completed at the central office level. Cooper will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement. 


Nominations are open for the Outstanding Employee Awards!

To submit a nomination for a Cooper Middle School Outstanding Employee in one of the categories below, please complete the nomination through this Google form link: https://forms.gle/c3PNyuEBrpQAjgAP9. You may nominate an employee in one or more categories. All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category. The google form link has more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards and the eligibility requirements are below.

Outstanding Teacher 

Eligibility: Have completed at least three full years of teaching

Outstanding New Teacher

Eligibility: Be within the first three years of their teaching career

Outstanding Principal

Eligibility: Currently work as an elementary, middle, secondary or high school principal in FCPS                                               

Outstanding Leader 

Eligibility: Currently work as a full-time or part-time Schedule C or School-Based administrator who has completed at least one contracted year of employment with FCPS in this position.

Common positions in this category: Associate Principal, Assistant Principal, Director of Student Services, Director of Student Activities

Outstanding Professional Employee 

Eligibility: Have completed at least one year of contracted full-time or part-time professional employment in FCPS in their current position

Currently work as a Schedule-B employee in an FCPS school or center, or in a non-instructional position that supports school leadership.

Common positions in this category: School-Based Technology Specialist, Technology Support Specialist, Assessment Coach, Career Center Specialist, Instructional Coach, Psychologist, Social Worker, Speech Pathologist, School Counselor, Systems of Support Administrator, Safety and Security Specialist other employee paid as a Resource Teacher who serves in a non-instructional or administrative role in the school

Outstanding Operational Employee

Eligibility: Have completed at least one year of contracted full-time or part-time operational employment in FCPS.  Currently work on the Schedule-A, Schedule-H, or Classroom Instructional Support (CIS) Scale in an FCPS school.

Common positions in this category: Common positions in this category: administrative and office assistants, custodial staff, food service staff, IA, PHA, PHTA, all parent liaisons
