Message from Dr. Floyd
Good afternoon Woodson Community,
As we look forward to the upcoming long weekend to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, we want to encourage our families and students to disconnect from school and technology during this time.
While we realize some students may have a long-term assignment due after the break, or are working to make-up assignments, there should not be any short term assignments due the first two full days back to school. Teachers are not assigning work on November 21st or 22nd that is then due on November 28th or 29th. We have also requested that our teachers do not give any major assessments the first two full days back to school. This mirrors our long-standing practice related to no homework during Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks.
As you approach the long holiday weekend, we hope that everyone can relax, and spend family time together. We want all of our Cavaliers to come back recharged as there are only three weeks until winter break. We are excited for three 5-day weeks; the longest stretch of uninterrupted school this Fall. So, let’s refresh our minds and bodies and finish out 2022 #CavStrong!
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Woodson High School, I wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
Dr. Floyd Principal
Mr. Scholla, Woodson's System of Support Advisor, serves Thanksgiving lunch to students yesterday.

This is a great honor and a testament to the students' hard work. Our singers have been preparing diligently to perform for the state conference.
In addition, two Woodson students will perform with the Virginia Senior Honors Choir at the conference. Students throughout the Commonwealth went through a rigorous audition process to compete for a position in these groups. Congratulations Anna Barata and Ivan Tysarczyk. Read more about the honor groups.
6. Cappies Review of Woodson's Production of One Man, Two Guvnors
Many FCPS high schools participate in the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Critics and Awards Program for High School Theatre, also known as the Cappies. The Cappies is a program through which high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews in local newspapers.
Josie Amspaugh, from Langley High School, wrote this review of Woodson High School's production of One Man, Two Guvnors.
7. Counselor Corner
The Student Services Department was excited to collaborate with key stakeholders this month during their fall Advisory Council meeting. See our brochure for highlights.
We also want to remind families that students may bookmark the Woodson Wellness website on their laptops using their FCPSSchools.net account to utilize for brain breaks and stress release to use during school (at appropriate times) during classes and downtime. Emergency mental health information is located on the site as well.

Woodson students can participate in HATS for SOME in the Woodson library. Students will be making a hat or scarf on a loom for the clothing closet at SOME.org, a shelter in Washington DC.

10. Help Us Thank Woodson Teachers and Staff
The PTSO invites all Woodson families to celebrate and recognize our wonderful teachers and staff this holiday season.
High School isn’t the same as elementary school where we had organized gift-giving and room parents. Please take time throughout the school year, and especially now in the holiday season, to recognize and thank the educators and support professionals that work with our children. Simple notes of appreciation, emails of gratitude and letters in support of teachers, counselors, principal, and/or support staff have enormous, meaningful impact.
Additionally, Woodson PTSO is collecting gift cards to raffle at the Annual Holiday Party for the Teachers and Staff on Monday, December 12th. Parents, families and students are invited to donate gift cards; please send donated gift cards to the front office in an envelope addressed to “Attn: Celeste Jones, Holiday Party Raffle Prizes.”
We kindly ask that we receive all donations by Wednesday, December 7th. Please contact Celeste Jones at cbjones@fcps.edu for more information.
11. Tutor.com
Did you know? Students who’ve used Tutor.com have provided positive feedback. Unless they’ve been opted out, students can access Tutor.com through Schoology. Every session is personalized to meet the needs of the student from remedial to advanced levels. Sessions focus on conceptual learning and critical thinking—not quick answers.
Students can access Tutor.com via a link in Schoology. Additional information about how to log in and access a tutor is on the following webpage: Middle & High - How It Works.
12. Opportunities to Participate in the FCPS Strategic Planning Process
FCPS is offering a number of opportunities for parents/caregivers to be involved in the Strategic Planning process! Check out two immediate options below:
Nominate Yourself or Someone Else for the Family Team
We are currently seeking nominations for parents/caregivers who are interested in contributing to Strategic Plan development as part of the Family Team. This team will represent the rich diversity of families that make up FCPS’ community, and will focus on identifying engagement and outreach practices that will improve our partnerships with families.
If you are interested in being part of the Family Team or would like to nominate someone else, please fill out this form by Tuesday, November 22.
Be a Key Communicator!
If you are a member of a community organization or group, consider signing up to be a key communicator during the strategic planning process. FCPS key communicators are active members of the community who people turn to for information, and have an interest in sharing information about the school division and encouraging involvement. If this describes you or someone you know, please get the details and complete this form by Monday, November 28.
