Veterans Day
principal

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! I hope everyone’s Veterans Day was peaceful last Friday and that everyone had a productive weekend. On Saturday, I went to support one of our teachers at the 15th Annual Artist Teacher Exhibition in Lorton, VA. So proud of our staff! We get closer into the holiday season, please continue to monitor your child's health by having them stay home when they are feeling ill, getting tested if they have symptoms and covering coughs and sneezes.

This past week Glasgow Middle School had our PBIS Open Campus event for 6-8 grade, which is based on students following our Panther Principles of Kindness, Commitment and Safety. We had everything from basketball, soccer, flag football…to gaming rooms, arts and crafts and lego sessions for our students to self-select. Through this quarterly system of rewarding good behavior, we have seen decreases in our unwanted behaviors. Also, last Monday our students took another AVID field trip to GMU. We want to continue to share the great things our students are getting exposure to!

We continue to have parent volunteers helping us in our hallways and school each week! Our partnership with our families within our building is key! Please continue to gather additional families to go through the volunteer process and help us ensure our students have a smooth start to the day! Also, you are invited to a Zoom meeting. When: Nov 14, 2022 04:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Register in advance for this meeting:

https://myfcpsk12.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYvcumvrjgsE9xWKlsIcVyfw86mhqMMbWhf After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

In an annual planning process, FCPS uses input from the community to help develop the school year calendar for the following year. The Calendar Survey will be sent to parents/caregivers, employees, and students in grades 7-12 next week. Our framework for creating the calendar is available online to ensure transparency, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable.

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

Missing Parent Permission for SOL Retakes

We currently have not received a Parent Permission SOL retake form from several students. This form is required from all students. If your child is missing this form, they will be notified by their Panther Time teacher & receive another copy of the form. We have also attached a copy for you to print if you prefer. You can also fill out this Google form or email our school testing coordinator Sarah N’Guessan senguessan@fcps.edu to respond if your child has permission to retake the SOL or not. You only need to pick 1 method of response: paper form, Google form or email. If you have multiple students at Glasgow, we do need a response for each student.

Student Prayer

Per FCPS Policy, Glasgow provides accommodations for students who request time and space during the school day for prayer. Students may have the opportunity to pray for the last 10 minutes of the day in designated, supervised areas of our school. Students interested in this opportunity for prayer should come to student services to pick up an orange pass.

Student Vue and Parent Vue

All FCPS students have a Student Vue account. All student schedules are active and up to date in SIS Student Vue and SIS Parent Vue. If you do not have a SIS Parent Vue account, we strongly encourage you to sign up for an account. You can find directions on how to do so at this link: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/student-information-system-sis-fcps/sis-parent-account-registration. Once you have signed up for an account, you’ll need an activation code - which we will work as quickly as we can to provide to you. You can find a video that provides information on how to use SIS Parent Vue and all that you will be able to access with your account here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLwkkemipws.

FCPS Strategic Planning that Reaches All

The strategic planning process is a community-wide effort. There will be many opportunities to share feedback or participate in a community meeting. We want our community to stay informed and be involved. You can help!

If you are an active member of a community organization or group who people look to for information, please consider signing up to be a key communicator during the strategic planning process. FCPS key communicators should have an interest in sharing information about the school division and encouraging involvement. Key communicators will:

  • Receive regular updates including news, information, future events, and engagement opportunities.
  • Share the information they receive with their group in a timely manner.
  • Encourage group participation in engagement and feedback opportunities where appropriate and possible.

If you or someone from your organization would like to serve as an FCPS key communicator during the strategic planning process, please submit this form by Monday, November 28

Kiss and Ride

We have many families who choose to drop off and pick up students through the kiss and ride line.  In order to keep the flow of traffic moving along and to maintain safety, we ask that you pull your cars up and stop at the locations our monitors direct to before allowing your child to exit your vehicle.  Please be sure students are ready to exit cars with all of their things out of car doors that exit onto the sidewalk.  Please wait for the car in front of you to pull forward before you begin to depart.   We also ask that you refrain from parking in the kiss and ride line or double parking in the lane.  If you need to enter the building, please find a spot to park in our lot.  We want to be sure that we are all doing our part to keep everyone safe.  Thank you so much for your cooperation.

Hello Glasgow Families! The after school program is proud to announce the start of our Teen Cuisine Program. Teen Cuisine will run on Tuesdays starting at 3:00 until 4:45. Announcements were made during each lunch period asking interested students to come see me for interest forms. We’ve filled all allotted spaces for this club and it’s now a closed group. Teen Cuisine consists of 8 sessions in partnership with VA Tech Cooperative Extension and Fairfax County Public Schools, where students will learn about prepping your kitchen and utensils, ingredients, and how to prepare healthier meals. If you’re child is interested in joining Teen Cuisine, there will be another session offered in February 2023! Information about the start of the next session will be advertised in January.

Please continue to remind your students sign ups for the after school program takes place during each lunch period. Signing up during your lunch is mandatory if your student(s) plan to stay after for any reason. If you have not signed a registration form, please let me know and I’ll make sure to send one home or via email. My email is gwilliams2@fcps.edu if you have any questions or concerns.
