veterans day

Dear Bailey's Families,

First, to all who served, we want to say a very special Thank You on this Veterans Day! We are so grateful to you for the sacrifices that you made so we may enjoy the freedoms that we have.

Second, even though it was a short week, it was still a great week of learning and fun.  Students in kindergarten participated in math lessons that included counting objects and identifying numbers. In language arts, students started learning about pattern books, and  they continue to learn about letters and letter sounds.  This week kindergarteners focused on  learning about the "p" and "ch" sounds. Students in first grade continued to learn about different math operations, specifically learning about the addition and the equal symbols.  In reading, students learned to use details in the story to support their predictions about what will happen next. Second grade students engaged in math activities including matching base-ten representations to numbers, making combinations of 10 and combinations of 20.  In writing, they continued to write their personal narratives focusing on one small moment they have experienced.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!  As always, thank you for your continued support of our school!

Satonya Dews, Principal

Jillian Bell, Assistant Principal

Mirna Galeano, Assistant Principal

Helpful Tips from our Mental Health Team

Social Emotional Learning and Being on a Sports Team

Playing sports offers lots of teachable moments. If your child has the skills and desire, have them participate in group sports and talk about the rules and what is expected. Practice what they will say if the child’s team wins versus losses and talk about how the others might feel if they say something unsupportive. Being a good sport and practicing sportsmanship can take lots of practice, but it's important for building teamwork and flexibility. It's also great exercise.

Donation Opportunity

Throughout the year, we are able to support many student needs through the generous donations from a non-profit organization called Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue. They provide support with school supplies, backpacks, coats, toys and other items. In order to continue to provide such support to the community, we are asking for support with monetary donations. Any amount can help tremendously. Please consider supporting this organization by submitting donations to:

Thank you!

Staying Healthy This Cold/Flu Season

Although the community level of COVID-19 in Fairfax County is currently low, cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses are on the rise. It continues to be important to wash your hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, monitor your health daily, and stay home if you are sick. For more tips, visit our Return to School website.

FCPS Calendar Survey Coming Soon!

In an annual planning process, FCPS uses input from the community to help develop the school year calendar for the following year. The Calendar Survey will be sent to parents/caregivers, employees, and students in grades 7-12 next week.

Our framework for creating the calendar is available online to ensure transparency, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable.

FCPS Strategic Planning that Reaches All

The strategic planning process is a community-wide effort. There will be many opportunities to share feedback or participate in a community meeting. We want our community to stay informed and be involved. You can help!

If you are an active member of a community organization or group who people look to for information, please consider signing up to be a key communicator during the strategic planning process. FCPS key communicators should have an interest in sharing information about the school division and encouraging involvement. Key communicators will:

  • Receive regular updates including news, information, future events, and engagement opportunities.
  • Share the information they receive with their group in a timely manner.
  • Encourage group participation in engagement and feedback opportunities where appropriate and possible.

If you or someone from your organization would like to serve as an FCPS key communicator during the strategic planning process, please submit this form by Monday, November 28.

Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes

The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.

The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.

Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.

Learn more about the recommended changes on our website. The public feedback form will be available on our website and will be open October 31 through December 1.

Schools Adopt Text and Translation Platform

FCPS has recently adopted TalkingPoints, a two-way messaging app that allows parents and caregivers to communicate with teachers and schools. Look for messages from Bailey’s ES to learn how we are implementing the app.  For more information, visit the FCPS TalkingPoints webpage.

The app translates messages, so teachers can input messages in English and parents can respond in their preferred language. TalkingPoints supports 125 languages, making it easier and faster for our FCPS families to connect with their schools. If you need to update your preferred correspondence language, contact the main office at 703-575-6800.

Special Education Review Final Report

FCPS is committed to providing excellence for all students, and continues to seek ways to improve and ensure the highest quality of special education and related services for students and families. At the request of the School Board, the FCPS Office of Auditor General engaged a consultant to conduct an independent, third-party review of FCPS’ special education program in October 2020.

American Institutes for Research® (AIR) presented their final report during the School Board’s October 4 work session. Watch the video of AIR’s presentation and visit FCPS’ Office of Auditor General webpage for more information.

The School Board will hold a second session to discuss a framework for the Special Education Enhancement Plan at their Tuesday, November 15 work session.

What makes you feel loved does not necessarily make your child feel loved. Sometimes they need more than caring words. Show love through stopping, paying attention, and above all, knowing how to                      connect.
