Dear Cub Run Families,
We can all feel the temperatures drop as this second half of November sets in! While the high temps were still in the 70s last week, families and staff came together for a Cub Run Clean Up day, where students, families, and staff came out to trim, rake, and mulch!

The biggest project was the set up of another outdoor space with logs for seats near our butterfly garden! We hope you'll stop by and take a look as you drop your children off at school, pick them up in the afternoons, or stop by on the weekend. This space is located near our Cub Run Little Library, so feel free to grab a book, take a seat, and enjoy this outdoor space!

On Monday, November 14, 1st grade teacher Mrs. Tracy Cousino and I were proud to attend the FCPS School Board meeting to accept a certificate of recognition for Cub Run's new status as a purple star school. Along with 40 other schools, this honor recognizes the support that we offer to our military families. I am grateful to Mrs. Cousino for spearheading this initiative, and to Mrs. Monique Norwood for serving as our military family liaison.
I hope that everyone has a good rest of the week!
Warmly,
Mrs. Lorenzi
Principal

Our Third Grade students did a great job last Thursday honoring our Veterans. Kudos to Kristi Shultz for conducting a great performance!
Here is a link to the recorded version of our Third Grade Veterans Day concert: Veteran Day Concert

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid expresses how grateful FCPS is to all veterans and to all the families of veterans.
Thanksgiving Menu-Students Only
As you know, the annual Thanksgiving luncheon that included inviting our students’ parents, guardians, and family members in years past has not been offered over the last few years due to COVID-19. This school year, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is excited to be able to provide a Thanksgiving lunch menu for students on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Unfortunately, FCPS has reported that supply chain challenges continue to impact daily operations of the FNS; as a result, the lunch this year will be not be open to parents, guardians, and other guests. We share in your disappointment and hope that we can bring back the family Thanksgiving luncheon next year.

As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed November 23-25. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! Classes will resume on Monday, November 28. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Cub Run SCA is holding their annual holiday Toy Drive November 14-18. Please bring new and unwrapped toy donations to the bin in the lobby, or to Mrs. Buesing’ s office in Theatre 2. Toys will go directly to families in need in our community. Please reach out to our SCA Sponsor (Mrs. Buesing - kabuesing@fcps.edu) with any questions.
FLE Information & Parent Preview Night
Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction. Students in kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.
In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in Schoology. To find those lessons, log into your Schoology account with your SIS login.
Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form.
A virtual parent preview night will be held on Thursday, November 17th from 6:30 - 7:30 (link will be shared via an e-Notify email).
Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes
The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.
The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.
Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.
The public feedback form will be available on our website Family Life Education Community Review Of New Materials and will be open October 31st through December 1st.

Community Review Begins for Secondary World Languages Basal Resources
FCPS will adopt new Secondary (Grades 6-12) World Languages Basal Resources for the 2023-24 school year. Basal resources are the primary instructional resources used to teach a given subject. The process for selecting new resources includes an opportunity for the public to review the instructional materials being considered. Public review will run through Thursday, December 8. A review committee made up of community members, administrators, and teachers will meet in November and December to evaluate the materials under consideration as well as feedback from the community. Find more information on FCPS’ website.
Framework for Special Education Enhancement Plan
At the request of the School Board, the FCPS Office of Auditor General engaged American Institutes for Research® (AIR) to conduct an independent, third-party review of FCPS’ special education program in October 2020. AIR presented their final report during the School Board’s October 4 work session. View their key findings. Next steps include working with a diverse stakeholder group to develop a comprehensive Special Education Enhancement Plan to address areas of need.
For more information on the Special Education Review, visit FCPS’ Office of Auditor General webpage.
