Churchill Chatter - Issue 8, November 11, 2022

vet

Thank you to all the Veterans who shared their experiences with CRS students.

Dear Churchill Road Families,

What a great start to the month of November. In honor of Veteran's Day, many classrooms hosted Veterans and learned about their important contributions.  All classrooms honored the service of our country’s veterans. Thank you to all of our parents and family members who shared their experiences with students.  The students were engaged during these conversations and full of good questions.

In the past two weeks,

  • Kindergartners learned about dia de los muertos, a Mexican holiday, and created colorful calaveras that are used as symbols during this celebration.
  • First grade learned that when an object vibrates, it can create a sound.
  • Second grade students paid close attention to the tadpoles, toads, herons, and other creatures in the marshes during a field trip to Huntley Meadows.
  • Third graders finished their read aloud, Make Way for Dyamonde Daniel, and discussed how it compared to Because of Winn Dixie.
  • Fourth graders spent a day at Jamestown, learning why this site was chosen by settlers, and what life was like for those in the settlement.
  • In fifth grade, students traveled back in time to analyze the geography of the Fertile Crescent.
  • Sixth grade students learned that a plan to put a resort on Mars is not so far fetched during a visit from a CRS family who works in the aerospace industry. Students heard about current research in the industry learning there is even a partnership with a major hotel chain so people can have a place to stay when traveling in space!

Have a wonderful  weekend.

Sincerely,

Ms. Cherith Pierson and Ms. Jennifer Niccolls

Portrait of a Graduate

pog

This month’s theme is aligned with the Portrait of a Graduate attributes of being a Global and Ethical Citizen and Communicator. This involves skills such as sharing thoughts, feelings, ideas, and perspectives so others can understand us and we can understand them. As well as recognizing similarities and differences among cultures, caring for our planet, acting responsibly and being a strong member of a community.

Schools Adopt Text and Translation Platform

FCPS has recently adopted TalkingPoints, a two-way messaging app that allows parents and caregivers to communicate with teachers and schools. For more information, visit the FCPS TalkingPoints webpage.

The app translates messages, so teachers can input messages in English and parents can respond in their preferred language. TalkingPoints supports 125 languages, making it easier and faster for our FCPS families to connect with their schools. If you need to update your preferred correspondence language, contact the front office at 703-288-8400 and ask for Ms. Kim.

Staying Healthy This Cold/Flu Season

Although the community level of COVID-19 in Fairfax County is currently low, cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses are on the rise. Let’s remember to please keep students home when they are sick with a fever.  Students may return to school 24 hours after they are fever-free (without the use of fever-reducing medication).

FCPS Calendar Survey Coming Soon!

In an annual planning process, FCPS uses input from the community to help develop the school year calendar for the following year. The Calendar Survey will be sent to parents/caregivers, FCPS employees, and students in grades 7-12 next week.

Our framework for creating the calendar is available online to ensure transparency, as we work to build a calendar that is inclusive and equitable.

FCPS Cares Program
