Message from FCPS Instructional Services

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

With the first quarter over, you will soon be receiving a progress report. On that report, you may notice a change in how we grade Language Arts progress.

In the past, progress reports have indicated if a student has been assessed using materials below, on, or above grade level. This year, teachers will report student progress using the scale of 1-4 on the grade level language arts standards. For students participating in Advanced Academic Program (AAP) Level 4, marks will be based on  extended grade level standards.

This change will help ensure that caregivers understand how students are progressing toward grade level standards and reading skills. It will also help teachers communicate about each student’s strengths, and in what areas they need to improve as they progress through elementary school.

Teachers use a variety of information to provide a complete picture of each student’s literacy progress according to state and county standards. Parents/caregivers will receive more information about reading performance later this month in the iReady Parent Report. This report will be mailed to families (Grades 1-3) or be available through SIS ParentVue (Grades 4-6). It will also include information to help you understand the iReady Domain Scores.

If you have any questions, please contact your teacher.  You may also visit the Elementary School Grading and Reporting webpage or the Equitable Access to Literacy Plan page.

Island Creek Celebrates Diversity!

We want to empower our Island Creek students to have a strong voice, share their experiences, and learn from, and celebrate, each other! We would love to hear from our Crocs about the various traditions, holidays, observances, and cultural experiences families celebrate or recognize.

During the month of November, we would like our students to learn about the following observances:

  • Native American Heritage Month
  • Día de los Muertos
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Additional November observances or celebrations that your child would like to share

If your child is interested in recording a 1-2 minute segment for our Morning News Show please use this link: https://flip.com/2ec3a9bc as we would love to learn from them! Should you need additional information with recording, please contact Ms. Keaney, Librarian (mkeaney@fcps.edu). Alternatively, if your child would prefer to make a poster to display in the hallways at Island Creek, please have them bring their poster to Ms. Fallert, Principal (jrfallert@fcps.edu).

FCPS Cares!

The FCPS CARES Program is an opportunity for parents, staff, and community members to recognize FCPS employees for going above and beyond to help others and show they care. We invite you to submit your story, so we can all acknowledge the good work of FCPS employees at Island Creek ES. We love our OHES staff members, let's tell them how we feel!

Holiday Drive for Gift Cards

The Holidays are fast approaching, and many families are experiencing financial hardships. The Island Creek PTA is once again collecting gift card donations (from grocery stores such as Giant, Safeway, Walmart, and Target) to help Island Creek families in need. Our goal is to collect $3,000 to help support families in our community.

If you would like to contribute, please drop off the gift cards to the Island Creek Front Office Staff by Monday, December 5. We prefer gift cards in $25 increments and ask that you consider giving several cards if you would like to donate more!

The PTA can accept monetary donations through Monday, December 5, via PayPal with “Holiday Drive” in the message field.

Please use the PayPal link:   https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=LAHHW2ZR8UUGU

The Holiday Drive will be collecting donations between November 14– December 5, 2022. We appreciate your support in helping to make this holiday season a bit more magical for Island Creek Elementary families in need.
