Dear Poplar Tree Families,
We had a wonderful Veteran's Day assembly yesterday honoring members of our Poplar Tree community that are serving or who served in the military. Thank you to all our Veterans and their families for the sacrifices made for our country. A special thank you to the Veterans who attended our first school wide assembly since 2019! It was truly a remarkable event!

Dear Poplar Tree Families,
We really enjoyed being Principals of the Day on November 10th. We loved visiting some classrooms to interact with students and read. The staff were really nice. We noticed that some classrooms were set up differently to meet the needs of students. There were lots of rooms that we never knew about and many pipes!!!

📚The Book Fair is Coming!!🔖
This year it will be live and in-person, and will feature a whole “llama” books for you and your students to purchase. From November 14-18, the library is transformed into a book store where your students can browse the latest and greatest titles.
Family Night, when grown-ups can come shopping with their students, is on Tuesday, November 15 from 4-7 PM.

We have so many amazing staff members at Poplar Tree ES...now is the time to submit a nomination for an Outstanding Employee!
If you would like to nominate a staff member, please complete the nomination through this Google form link. You may nominate one employee at our school or multiple employees (one individual may only nominate one employee per category.) All that is required for a preliminary nomination is a paragraph or two about how this employee demonstrates exceptional work in the criteria for that category. The google form link has more information regarding the criteria for each of these awards.

6th Grade Youth Survey
Dear 6th grade parents and guardians,
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey in our schools. Poplar Tree Elementary School will administer the survey to our 6th grade students on November 21, 2022. A detailed letter and opt out forms will go home in the Friday Folders on October 21. Opt-out forms are due by Friday, Nov. 18. Thank you!
Feedback Welcome on Proposed Family Life Education Changes
The Fairfax County School Board is reviewing recommended changes to the Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum and invites public feedback as part of the review process. In May 2022, the Family Life Education Curriculum Advisory Committee (FLECAC) presented recommended curriculum changes, to go into effect for the 2023-24 school year. Those changes include adopting gender-combined instruction, and exploring instruction of gender identity, recommended media, and other instructional changes.
The recommendations reflect leading education and child development research and expert advice. According to research cited in the recommendations, these changes will create a more inclusive learning environment, result in higher academic achievement for students, and improve school climate.
Public feedback will be shared with FLECAC and the School Board. FCPS staff and the School Board will consider all feedback but are unable to reply to individuals.

11/15 - 12/16: Read-a-Thon Sponsors
Encourage students to get Read-a-thon sponsors from friends and family from 11/15 – 12/16. Donations are not pledges per book read, but a flat donation for participating and for celebrating their love of reading. Donations are all done online – https://app.memberhub.gives/ptesreadathon – search for your child’s name to access & share their fundraising page!
Our goal is to exceed last year’s PTES Read-a-thon and raise $7,000!
All proceeds will go to supporting Poplar Tree school grants that benefit ALL students!
12/1 - 12/16: Read-a-Thon!!
Students will participate in reading sessions at school and can also log reading sessions at home. Each student participant will receive a custom Poplar Tree bookmark!

- Wear pajamas or cozy clothes. Teachers will encourage reading throughout the day. Students can bring in books from home to share with friends throughout the day (labeled with student’s name)

Before & After School Programs
The Poplar Tree PTA serves as a sponsor for before/after school programs at PTES! These programs are facilitated by parent volunteers and vendors. You must be a PTA member to participate in the programs. This year we are proud to be offering:

- We are continuing the before-school Running/Walking Club for all students grades 1-6. If a Kindergartener wants to join, please have a parent come and run or walk too. Best of all, it’s FREE! We meet from 7:45 to 8:20 AM Thursday mornings starting September 29th - December 2nd.

It's time for the 2nd Annual Read-a-Thon! Please help us make this fundraiser a success by signing up to help with the Read-a-Thon event, which will last several weeks, and give the kids an opportunity to receive donations for participating in the Read-a-Thon.
The Kickoff Event for the Read-a-Thon this year will coincide with the first night of the PTES Book Fair, which will be November 15th, 2022! We are SO excited to have the Book Fair return as an in-person event this year! Look forward to seeing you all there, and thank you again for any volunteers who can help make these events a success!
