Calendar

January 10: College Planning Night for Juniors & Their Families, 7pm @ JMHS Auditorium. Details were emailed directly to junior students and their families on 1/3/23.

January 12:  Rising Freshman Curriculum Night, 6:00-7:00pm @ JMHS Auditorium (8th grade students and parents)

January 12:  AP Panel, 6:00-6:45pm @Warhawk Hall (for students and families interested in learning more about the expectations and benefits of taking AP courses)

January 12:  Electives Showcase, 6:15-7:45pm @Small Gym (for all grade levels)

January 13: Electives Fair for rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students during Warhawk Time. Students will receive more specific details through their advisories and Schoology.

January 17:  Rising 10th-12th Grade Curriculum Night, 6:00-7:00pm via Zoom

January 18:  “Growing Your Career” Career & Education Expo for Military Families, 10:00am - 2:00pm @National Museum of the United States Army (Ft. Belvoir)

February 1:  Gap Year Fair, 6:30pm @West Springfield High School. Register here.

Academic Advising/Course Selection for 2023-2024

The Academic Advising process for course selection for the 2023-2024 school year is starting in January.

James Madison High School hosts a few events for families and students to get more information:

Thursday, January 12 (in-person events)

  • Rising 9th Grade Curriculum Night from 6:00pm – 7:00pm in the Auditorium
  • AP Panel for Rising 10th-12th Grades from 6:00pm – 6:45pm in Warhawk Hall
  • Electives Showcase from 6:15pm – 7:45pm in the Small Gym

Tuesday, January 17 (virtual event)

All students will receive an overview of the Academic Advising process during Advisory on Friday, January 13. Students should plan to enter their Course Requests in their StudentVUE accounts. Directions and deadlines for entering course requests will be provided on January 13.

Students will also be able to attend an Electives Showcase during Warhawk Time (WT1 for 9th grade; WT2 for 10th and 11th grade) on January 13.

Current Madison students will be meeting one-on-one with their school counselors to finalize their course selections on the following dates:

  • 10th Grade (Rising Juniors) – January 30 – February 8
  • 11th Grade (Rising Seniors) – February 9 – February 27
  • 9th Grade (Rising Sophomores) – February 28 – March 13

Students will be notified of their specific date for a meeting through their Advisory on January 13.

Current 8th Grade Students (Rising 9th Grade) will participate in a presentation with JMHS counselors at their middle schools.

  • Kilmer: Tuesday, January 17
  • Luther Jackson: Friday, January 20

Academic Advising Google Site:  JMHS Student Services is organizing a Google Site for students and families to access more information about Academic Advising, including curriculum overview, graduation requirements, Dual Enrollment information, and more. The video presentation with an overview of Academic Advising will also be posted on this site.

“Growing Your Career” Career & Education Expo for Military Families | 1/18/23 @National Museum of the United States Army (Ft. Belvoir) | 10:00am-2:00pm

This event  is for transitioning service members, military spouses, dependents, and veterans. It will include opportunities for summer hire for military dependents. There will be 12 colleges/universities present, and 12 agencies that will be hiring for summer and other employment. The event will also touch on how to apply for GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon Program as well.

NOVA Virtual Information Session for Seniors and Parents/Guardians

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) will be offering virtual information sessions to help seniors and their families learn more about the opportunities, numerous services, and resources designed to get NOVA students connected with the NOVA Nighthawk Community. These sessions are open to all FCPS seniors and their parents/guardians.

Gap Year Fair | 2/3/22 @West Springfield HS | 6:30pm-9:00pm

Gap Year

FCPS School Counseling Services and Go Overseas are co-hosting the annual FCPS Gap Year Fair on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at West Springfield High School from 6:30 to 9:00pm. This event is for high school students and their families who are interested in learning more about the growing array of gap year opportunities. 

The evening will begin with a presentation in the auditorium from 6:30 to 7:15pm, by Julia Rogers, Founder of EnRoute Consulting and Gap Year Association Board President. Immediately following, the program fair will be in the cafeteria from 7:15 to 9:00pm, with representatives from over 40 programs offering gap year opportunities. Students in all grade levels and their families are invited to meet the representatives and learn about the variety of experiences available.

Students are encouraged to pre-register for this event.

**In the event of inclement weather on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the Gap Year Fair will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology from 6:30 - 9:00pm.


U.S. Service Academy/ROTC Event | 2/7/23 @Oakton HS | 7:00pm

Students interested in attending a U.S. Service Academy:  Air Force, Army, Navy, Merchant Marine, Coast Guard or an ROTC program:  Air Force, Army, Navy & Marine Corps, should plan to attend the U.S. Service Academy/ROTC program on February 7 at Oakton HS at 7:00pm. This event is hosted by Madison, Oakton, Woodson, Fairfax and Marshall High Schools.

Students in all grade levels are invited to attend. There will be a general presentation followed by a fair style set up for students and families to visit with individual representatives. A representative from Congressman Gerry Connolly's office will also be there to talk about the nomination process.


FCPS Post Secondary Week Session Recordings

Session recordings from the Fall 2022 FCPS Look to the Future Week are now available. There are a variety of topics definitely worth listening to, such as, Semester at Sea, Study in Spain, NCAA Eligibility, NOVA, Work-Based Learning, Scholarship 101, Dual Enrollment, Apprenticeships, Common App, Military and many more!
