PTSA News

  • Our next PTSA meeting is Monday, November 7th at 6:30pm in the school library.  Fairfax County police will be on hand along with our in-school drug prevention advisor.  Martha Carucci will speak on "The Power of Choice" as well.   Our Region 3 representative, Karen Corbett Sanders, will be presenting as well -- we are taking back our schools and kids!  Please do not miss this very important and timely meeting!

School News

  • Come help us celebrate the hard work of our First Quarter A & A/B Honor Roll students!  On Friday, November 18 our honor roll students will be recognized with a Moe’s Chips & Queso bar during all four lunches and are looking for volunteers to help with set up, service, and clean up from 10:30 am- 1:30 pm.  Please see the SignUp Genius link below for more information and sign up if you are able.  Thank you! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E0E4FA5A829A57-wphs
  • West Potomac PTSA was proud to help sponsor the First Quarter Rising Stars Celebration on Thursday 11/3/22. Students were recognized with certificates of achievements and refreshments. Dr. Millard and Kevin McMahon, Director of Student Services praised the students for their hard work and encouraged them to continue to excel.

WPHS Work Awareness and Transition Food Bank

  • Our Work Awareness and Transition (WAT) class is working on a food bank, which will provide food boxes to families in need before breaks and as needed throughout the year.  We are currently looking for donations of the following items to have boxes ready before Thanksgiving:
    • Low sugar cereal
    • Granola bars
    • Canned fruit in 100% juice
    • Canned green beans
    • Canned corn
    • Hearty soups
    • Canned chicken or tuna
    • Spaghetti sauce
    • Pasta
    • Fun items ( inexpensive games, seasonal plates/napkins, window clings, etc.)
    • Peanut butter
    • Cooking oil
    • Canned chicken or tuna
  • Donations can be left in a labeled box in the front office.

West Potomac Crew

  • Announcing the West Potomac Crew Team Tag Day Fundraiser! Saturday, November 5, 2022 Watch for student rowers in your neighborhood, raising money for their team! Crew is a very unique sport, and we are lucky to have it available at West Potomac. As a club sport, it does not receive school funding. Donations help with equipment purchase, maintenance, and student scholarship. Please consider helping our team to ensure a full and successful season this year. Thank you! West Potomac Marching Band

  • Congratulations to our marching band students! We had a great trip to the JMU Parade of Champions to finish off our competition season. The band won the “Fan Favorite” Award and Fifth Place in our class. These students have overcome a lot of challenges this season and we are very proud of their hard work and perseverance.

Firefighters & Friends to the Rescue

  • https://www.ffandfriends2therescue.org/ is a small nonprofit organization that provides West Potomac High School backpacks at the start of every school year and winter coats when the weather cools.  This year they provided our school 50 backpacks full of supplies and 60 coats for our students.  Please consider making a monetary donation to this amazing organization that supports our Wolverines!

West Potomac Wellness Committee

  • The WPHS Wellness Committee invites you and your family to attend a screening of a documentary called Speaking Grief. This event is being held for our community to come together to learn and talk about grief. It will take place on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 6-8 pm at West Potomac High School in the library with light refreshments, the documentary screening, and a closing activity. If you plan to attend, please register for the event by completing this RSVP form: https://forms.gle/gNnmT5fkwSEdahHY8

College and Career Center Updates

ASVAB Test:

  • Each year West Potomac High School offers students the opportunity to take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery). The ASVAB is a multi‐aptitude battery of tests that helps in identifying different skills and competencies. It is the entrance exam required for students who plan on enlisting in the military after high school.
  • The ASVAB will be administered to interested seniors and juniors on Dec. 12th in the College & Career Center from 8:30 am – 11:30 am.   An email was sent to all seniors, juniors, and parents/guardians with additional details, including the link for students to register.  (Pre-registration is required for this event.) 

College Access Fairfax:

  • We have a phenomenal community partner in College Access Fairfax (CAF).  This organization offers information and free services for FCPS families of students in middle and high school regarding the financial aid process for college bound students.  Please visit their website at https://collegeaccessfairfax.org/ to see a list of their scholarships, informative videos on financial aid topics, and dates of local events. 
  • Ms. Katrina Rowsey is our College Access Fairfax Financial Aid Champion.  She is in the WPHS College & Career Center each Thursday to assist students with their FAFSA or VASA application.  Seniors can stop in the Career Center during lunch for assistance or to get their questions answered .  No appointment necessary! 
  • Ms. Rowsey is also available to meet with students and families virtually.  Email her at khrowsey@fcps.edu if you have a question or to schedule an appointment.

  • The Digital SAT is coming, but will it affect your testing plan?  Current juniors don’t need to think about it at all! But, if you’re a sophomore (or younger), you’ll want to know about the digital test.

  • With the release of the first full-length digital adaptive SAT on College Board’s new testing app, Bluebook, students and educators can now get a clearer sense of the SAT of the future.
