Message from BMP PTA

The kids don't have school on November 8th. After you have cast your vote, join us at Chuck E Cheese (6301 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria) any time from 12-8. 20% of the proceeds will go to BMP PTA. The PTA will be using the funds to help pay for the students' field trips. Bring the flier from the Thursday folder for 10 free play points. We hope to see you there!

8th Annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 19 from 10 - 11:30 am

Please join the Bren Mar Park PTA for our 8th Annual Turkey Trot! Students will have the opportunity to race around the school, with prizes for the students in each grade/class who race the most laps. The race will start promptly at 10am, and the registration for each child is $10. Signup details will be provided shortly and included in next week's Thursday packets.

We are also looking for volunteers for the event to help direct runners and/or donate snacks for the event. Please email bmp.pta@gmail.com and ajsutton2008@gmail.com if you have any questions about the event or if you are available to volunteer. Thank you!

Thank you to our BMP Veterans!

Join us in honoring our Veterans by dressing in red, white and blue on Thursday, November 10th. Thank you to all those in our community who have served.

School Attendance

Parents have a huge influence on students when it comes to attendance.  Attending school regularly helps students feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help students do well in high school, college, and at work.

During the school year:

  • Maintain regular bed time and morning routinesto help your child develop a habit of on-time attendance.
  • Talk to your child about why going to school everyday is important unless they are sick.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick.
  • If your child seems reluctant to go to school, find out why and talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him feel comfortable and excited about learning. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
  • Reach out to your child’s teacher or school counselor if you are experiencing tough times such as unstable housing, transportation or health problems.

Thank you, Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue!

Throughout the year, we are able to support many student needs through the generous donations from a non-profit organization called Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue. They provide support with school supplies, backpacks, coats, toys and other items. In order to continue to provide such support to the community, they are asking for support with monetary donations. Any amount can help tremendously. Please consider supporting this organization by submitting donations to: www.operationwarm.org/firefighterandfriends. Thank you

AAP Planning Community Meeting

Thank you to all of the families who joined us for Tuesday's Advanced Academics Program (AAP) Planning Community meeting.  Mrs. Williams, principal, and Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, Mrs. Trope, shared the exciting proposal of working towards provided AAP Local Level IV services here at Bren Mar Park.  This would provided families of those students eligible for level IV services the opportunity to choose to stay at Bren Mar Park rather than go to the local AAP center.  In addition, the learning and structures would provide many children access and opportunities to the rich resources that this opportunity provides.

Thanksgiving Lunch at School

On Thursday, November 17, families are invited to join their children for Thanksgiving lunch here at Bren Mar Park!  We are not able to sell Thanksgiving school lunches to families due to staff shortages, and we invite families to bring their own lunch as together we celebrate all the things for which we are thankful!

Operation Warm Coats

Thanks to donations from the Fire Fighters and Friends organization we have received some winter coats. As the weather grows colder, if you find your student is in need of a coat, please reach out to Sandra Chetelat, sfchetelat@fcps.edu.

We are extremely grateful to the Fire Fighters and Friends organization for their ongoing support to our BMP community with donations of backpacks, school supplies and coats.

MUSIC

Music teachers, Mrs. Millett and Mr. Pearce, and students in grades 3-5 are very excited to begin learning how to play the recorder! We were unable to play recorders for the last two years! Our recorders have arrived, and we are beginning to play them this week!

In grades K-2, we are becoming better singers every day and improving at keeping a steady beat.  Students are taking turns to learn how to play some of the fun percussion instruments that we have in our music classrooms.

Finally, we are thrilled to announce that we will be having our Winter Sing Along this year! It will be on Friday, December 16th, the time has not yet been decided, so stay tuned!
