Field Hockey

The Cavaliers won their first regional playoff game 2-0 against South County last Tuesday. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie due to the dogged defense of Sydney Klugiewicz and Katie “The Hammer” Hamrock. In the third quarter, Caitlin Tran scored Woodson’s first goal from a Reese Cuviello pass. The Cavs added a second goal on a penalty corner when Julia Oleyar and Caitlin Tran moved the ball to Reese Cuviello who scored. Goalkeeper Caitlin Deer made three key saves in the second half to preserve the lead and allow the Cavs to proceed to the regional quarterfinals.

Then last Thursday, the Cavs defeated Justice 6-0 in the regional quarterfinal game. Caitlin Tran started the scoring in the first minute of the game from an Elizabeth Stribling pass. The Cavalier defense then stepped up with goalkeeper AJ Ingson preserving the lead five minutes later with two saves and subsequent stops by defenders Kim McNamara, Levi Weinberger, Sydney Klugiewicz, and Ella Mathias. Mia Zganjar closed the half by scoring Woodson’s second goal. Genna Cooke’s hustle in the third quarter set the tone for the increased energy and tempo the Cavaliers displayed in the second half. Ella Mathias followed with a nice run from the back line to press the attack which was subsequently matched in effort by Levi Weinberger’s running down of a Justice breakaway and AJ Ingson’s rejection of the ensuing shot. That action set up an eruptive three minutes where Katie Robertson scored Woodson’s third goal, which was followed a minute later by Caitlin Tran scoring from an Elizabeth Stribling pass on a penalty corner, which was followed a minute later by an Elizabeth Stribling goal from a Caitlin Tran pass. That offensive flurry gave the Cavs a 5-0 lead. Adia Elcock, Bethany Betts, Darcy Hilton, Amanda Lee, and Maddie Gaboury maintained the ball movement in the rest of the half which resulted in Genna Cooke scoring the sixth goal in the fourth quarter.

The Cavs play in the regional semifinals Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against Fairfax at Fairfax.

Ice Hockey

The Woodson Ice Hockey team faced off against Alexandria last Friday night at MedStar Capitals IcePlex.  Woodson jumped out to an early lead on a goal by Nathan Coons but was not able to hold off Alexandria in an exciting game, which Alexandria won 8 to 5.  Nathan Coons led the team with two goals.  Shannon Force, Seth Bond (Robinson), and Ryan Harlow (Robinson) each scored a goal in the game.

Next up is West Potomac.  Puck drop is at 6:30 pm on November 4, 2022 at Mount Vernon Ice Rink in Alexandria.  Come support the team!  Admission is free.

Your Voice is Needed: FCPS Strategic Planning

Our Voices Our Future

Fairfax County Public Schools launched the engagement phase for developing our brand new Strategic Plan 2023-2028

Superintendent Michelle Reid has heard from many of you about your hopes and aspirations for our students. That feedback will become part of our proactive strategic plan that will serve as our North Star—or guide—for the future.

The entire FCPS community is invited to engage in building our shared future. This includes hearing from parents and caregivers, students, and broader community, as well as surveying students in grades three and above. You will have an opportunity to have your voice heard in one of many sessions (both in-person and virtual) during November and December. We encourage you to join in this journey by actively participating in the conversation.

The goal is to have the final strategic plan by June 2023. For a more detailed overview, visit FCPS’ Strategic Planning 2023 webpage.

Rainbow Fentanyl Warning

The DEA has issued a public warning educating the community about rainbow fentanyl. These particular pills are targeted to youth and young adults with its colorful candy-like appearance making them look harmless. Rainbow Fentanyl resembles playground chalk before it is pressed into pills.

The trend is to crush the pills, smoke it off of a piece of aluminum foil, with the theory that it is “safer” than snorting. When burned, it often gives off a distinct odor of burned rubber. While we have not seen Rainbow Fentanyl yet, Perc 30’s or Blues are popular among adolescents and young adults in Fairfax County and the surrounding areas. Fentanyl is also found in counterfeit prescription pills, cocaine, Xanax, and other licit and illicit drugs.

The Medical Examiner from the Virginia Department of Health recently released its 1st quarter data for 2022 stating 483 people have died from fatal fentanyl overdoses in the state. For Fairfax County data and additional information on youth substance use, please see the Fairfax County Youth Substance Trends webinar.

Please see Woodson admin or counselors for any assistance you may need!  We are here for our community and want to keep everyone SAFE!

FCPS COVID Protocol

FCPS will continue to follow the guidance of national, state, and local health experts when determining the layered prevention strategies that are needed to keep our schools safe and open for learning. It is important that we all work together towards this goal.

Detailed information can be found in the Health and Safety Guidance Document.

Staying Home When Sick

FCPS continues to require families to review the Daily Health Screening before sending students to school. The 5 Day Isolation Period will also continue for COVID positive students and staff.
