Alcanza

Dear Atom Nation,

Last week we had 40 students attend the ALCANZA College Fair at George Mason University! Students were able to connect with over 150 colleges and universities. Every student who attended ALCANZA was provided a waiver to apply to George Mason University free of charge. Even our underclassmen will be able to use the waiver when they reach their senior year.

This week is Virginia College Application Week (VCAW). For this week only, most Virginia colleges and universities provide fee waivers for college applications. However, it is only available this week! See below for more information about everything going on in Student Services.

Director of Student Services

Important Information

Emergency Care & Health Information Forms: Annandale High School has mailed home to all students a pre-printed Emergency Care Information form and a Health Information Form. Please review the Emergency Care form and make any updates if necessary. Also, please complete the Health Information Form. Both forms need to be returned to Elizabeth Soteriou in the Student Services Office.

Transcript Requests for College Applications & Scholarships: Seniors need to request official high school transcripts ONE MONTH prior to application deadlines. For example, if a college application is due on November 1, the Transcript Request Form was due on October 1. We will be receiving a very high volume of requests in the coming months, and our Student Services staff needs adequate time to process them. Early Action and Early Decision application deadlines are quickly approaching. For step-by-step instructions and forms for submitting Transcript Requests, go to the AHS College & Career Google site

Fridays FAFSA/VASA Help During Lunch: Need help filling out the FAFSA or VASA? Every Friday our Financial Aid Champion, Ms. Mahieu will be offering FAFSA and VASA help to students during their lunch period. If you are interested in registering for an appointment during your lunch period please email Ms. Wells at lcwells@fcps.edu or Mr. Yeagley at Byeagley@fcps.edu so they can schedule the appointment for you. Please be sure you include the Friday you would like to come in, as well as what lunch you have that day.

College Rep Visits: Admission representatives have been visiting AHS since September and will continue into November. Effective Thursday, September 29, students will now need to register for ALL college rep visits through Naviance:

  • Log into Naviance
  • Click on Colleges
  • Click on College Visits
  • Click on “Register Now” on the visit(s) you would like to attend. You will be limited to attending a total of 5 visits, so please only register for the colleges you are highly interested in learning about.

*Please note that space is limited for some of these college visits and you must register at least 24 hours in advance.

Students must get a pass from Mr. Yeagley in the College & Career Center (Room 103) after school the day before the visit or before school the morning of the visit and show it to their teacher. Students who do not register through Naviance, get a pass, and get permission from their teacher will not be admitted to the college visit. If you have any questions about the process, please contact Brian Yeagley.

College Essay Workshop (NEW): The Atoms Writing Center will be holding its College Essay Workshop on Wednesday, October 19th. The workshop will be offered at two different times: during PRIDE Time in Clausen Hall and after school from 3-4pm in Room 274. To receive a pass to come during PRIDE Time, you must fill out this google form by midnight on Sunday, October 16th. If you want to come after school, there is no need to sign up, you can just walk in. During the workshop, tutors will review tips about the college essay (as well as supplemental essays). Then you will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a tutor to either brainstorm or to receive feedback on a draft of your college essay. If you have any questions, you can ask your English teacher or contact Mrs. Hanson at smhanson1@fcps.edu.

Early Online College - Spring Session (NEW): Early Online College (EOC) allows current high school juniors or seniors the opportunity to take up to two tuition free college courses. EOC courses for the spring semester begin on January 31, 2023, and end on April 24, 2023.  Courses are for college credit only and designed to jumpstart students' college experience. These courses were selected because they meet the requirements for most of NOVA’s associate degrees as well as being highly transferable as general education requirements for most colleges and universities.
