Opportunity for Students to Help Inform FCPS’ Future

You may have heard FCPS is developing a Strategic Plan that will serve as the school division’s roadmap for the future. We encourage every parent/caregiver, student, employee, and community member to participate in this important work.

The Strategic Plan Student Survey is optional, designed to protect your child’s privacy, and anonymous. It will take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Survey responses will play a major part in helping us develop the new Strategic Plan. This information will be analyzed and included in reports from Performance Fact, FCPS’ consulting firm.

While the survey is voluntary, we would like all students in Grades 3 to 12 to take part in it. If you would like to view the survey or opt your child out of participating in it, please visit the Strategic Plan Student Survey webpage. The deadline to submit an opt-out form is TODAY Friday, October 28.

I welcome your feedback, questions, and ideas.  Please don't hesitate to reach out to me at any time.

Together WE are RAM STRONG!

Thank you,

Amy Goodloe, Ed.D.

Celebrations in our Community:

As a reminder, Friday, October 28, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools are closed for students on Monday, Oct. 31, for a teacher workday. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

November:

Dia de los Muertos - November 1-2

Día de los Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Tuesday, November 1, and Wednesday, November 2, are “O” Days this year. To learn more about Día de los Muertos, watch this video. While Día de los Muertos is largely celebrated in Mexico and Latin America, it also coincides with All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2). These days are celebrated by Catholics, Anglicans, and some Protestants worldwide to honor those who have died and gone to heaven (All Saints Day) and those who may still be in purgatory (All Souls Day). The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Veterans Wall of Honor

Rocky Run MS Named a 2022-23 Purple Star School

Rocky Run Middle School School has been selected to receive the School Year 2022-2023 Purple Star Designation from the Virginia Department of Education.  This is the second time Rocky Run has received this distinguished award.

The Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. At Rocky Run, we work to support and recognize our military connected students with transition programs that help them adjust to our school, such as the Ambassadors program and middle school transition programs. We celebrate Month of the Military Child and host an annual Veterans' Day Breakfast to celebrate our military-connected families.

Receiving the Purple Star is testament to our staff’s continued commitment in supporting military connected students and their families.  More info can be found at https://www.doe.virginia.gov/support/student_family/military/va-psdp/index.shtml

Fairfax County Youth Survey - 8th Grade Only

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The survey is given to all students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 each fall. It provides a wealth of information about a variety of topics related to our youth that influence their physical and mental well-being, from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors to symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts.

Read more about the Youth Survey on the FCPS website

Youth Survey administration date at Rocky Run is November 15 through Rock Time classes.

Families may choose to opt out their students. Students opted out will spend the class period in an alternate location and can use the time to complete or review class work. You can access links to the FCPS Youth Survey opt-out forms in English, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. All these along with opt-out forms for alternate versions can be found on the FCPS website as well.

Opt-out forms can be sent to the office with your student, mailed, or emailed to Ms. Ashleigh Kim at askim@fcps.edu no later than November 7.
