October 2022- End of First Quarter around the corner

Dear Dranesville Families,

I hope you have been out to enjoy these lovely days of fall. Our area parks have so many nice trails for hiking, please take advantage of them. Families with fourth graders see below to get your free pass to our national parks.

The School Board has kicked off our strategic planning process with Dr. Reid, and there will be many ways for you to participate over the upcoming months.  We are aiming to have our strategic plan prepared by May 2023.  We will have surveys and open public forums across the district for families and community members as well as surveys and focus groups for students.  You will be able to opt your student out of the surveys if you desire.  Please watch my newsletter and your school newsletters for information on all of this as we move forward.

We are also beginning to work on our calendar and our budget for the school year 2023-2024.  We will also be asking for your input on both of these processes so be thinking about your priorities.  I am hoping we can set the calendar for the next two years during this work so that it will be easier for all of us to plan our schedules.  We are changing the way we will get your input on our Capital Improvement Plan too. See below for more information on how to give input on those changes, but don't delay because it closes today.

One of my recent highlights was riding our morning bus routes to meet more of our Area 4 transportation crew and to see how they are managing our bus routes while dealing with a shortage of drivers. I was impressed to see how the drivers collaborate by radio to be sure every bus stop is serviced as efficiently as possible.  The bus I rode did routes for Longfellow MS, McLean HS, Springhill ES, and then Westgate ES. Last week was the week where drivers counted every rider at each stop to determine the bus loads.  There may be a few changes to bus routes to alleviate bus overcrowding in some areas. Even with the stress of the job, I watched the bus driver give a cheerful good morning to every student that got on the bus. These drivers are the first face of FCPS that our students see as they start their school day so their demeanor is important.  I also want to give kudos to our bus patrols.  They jumped right on the job when they got on the bus to help keep everyone safe.  We are anticipating some changes to bus use in our area to try and alleviate some of the issues for our bus routes still struggling to be on a routine schedule.  I know this has been hard for many of our families, and has been too long in coming, but we are trying to be creative.  Please, if you know of anyone that is interested in driving a bus, have them apply for a position with FCPS.  See below for information on our transportation job fairs. As I drove through multiple counties this weekend to see the fall leaves, I noted signs in each county trying to recruit drivers as we all struggle with this national problem.

I hope to see some of you at the Langley pyramid meeting with Dr. Reid on Wednesday, October 26 at 6:30 pm.  I enjoyed seeing our students ask Dr. Reid questions at the McLean Citizens Association (MCA) event last week at the McLean Community Center. We were accompanied by Douglas Tyson, Assistant Superintendent for Region 1 (Langley and Herndon) and Dr. Amelia Mitchell, Executive Principal for Region 2 (McLean).  We had a lively discussion on many topics including grading, snow days, climate change action, recess time, etc.  Thank you to MCA for hosting.

Have a fun Halloween weekend.

Elaine

Capital Improvement Plan Engagement

Closes TODAY, October 24

The Capital Project engagement process represents our commitment to ensuring all school facilities support current educational programs and provide safe spaces for students to learn. The plan includes dollars for renovations, modular classrooms, additions to existing schools, and construction of new schools. FCPS engages in this work on a regular cycle, as projects are in various stages of design and construction, and impact a variety of stakeholders. Over the summer and into fall, FCPS staff conducted a review of the capital project communication process and developed a strategy for increasingly robust outreach, accessibility, transparency, and accountability.

Capital projects represent an opportunity for families and community members to be involved in the district. Therefore, we want to hear from you. Take a moment to review the Capital Project engagement process outlined on our website and share your feedback. The feedback form will close today, October 24, and public input will be shared with the Fairfax County School Board.

Federal Impact Aid Forms- Due November 4

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey.  If Sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All responses are confidential.

All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4.

FCPS Strategic Planning

Four kids in front of a mural of kids holding hearts. "FCPS Our Voices, Our Future. Strategic Planning"

Fairfax County Public Schools is launching the engagement phase that will help us develop our brand new Strategic Plan. During her Community Conversations listening tour in each high school pyramid, Superintendent  Reid has heard from many of you about your hopes and aspirations for our students. That feedback will become part of our proactive strategic plan that will serve as our North Star—or guide—for the future.

We will be inviting the entire FCPS community to engage in building our shared future. This includes hearing from our parents and caregivers, and broader community, as well as surveying students in grades three and above. You will have an opportunity to have your voice heard in one of many sessions (both in-person and virtual) during November and December. We encourage you to join us in this journey by actively participating in the conversation. The goal is to have the final strategic plan by June 2023. For a more detailed overview, visit FCPS’ Strategic Planning webpage.

Kent Gardens Elementary School- Capacity Challenges

Addressing the Capacity Challenges

We know Kent Gardens Elementary School is over capacity, and we understand the strain that puts on the building and more importantly, the students, employees, and families within that building. Determining the best way to address these issues is a task that we are all invested in. It was encouraging to see the depth of care the Kent Gardens community has for their school at the Oct. 7 meeting. I hope you will continue to stay involved and informed. Here are three great ways to do just that:

Fairfax County Youth Survey

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The County has posted the results for the 2021 survey and has an article 5 Things to Know from the 2021-2022 Youth Survey on their website with five top takeaways.

The survey is anonymous and voluntary, and is given to all students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 each fall. It provides a wealth of information about a variety of topics related to our youth that influence their physical and mental well-being from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors to symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts.

The results provide a snapshot of our youth in Fairfax County but also serve as a barometer of our own effectiveness as a community in fostering healthy choices in our young people. Data from the Fairfax County Youth Survey is used as a measurement tool in the FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 2 - Caring Culture - Healthy Life Choices. The survey is anonymous and voluntary. Visit our website for more information on the upcoming Fairfax County Youth Survey.

New Text and Translation Messaging App

FCPS has recently adopted TalkingPoints, a two-way messaging app that allows parents and caregivers to communicate with teachers and schools. For more information, visit the FCPS TalkingPoints webpage.

The app translates messages, so teachers can input messages in English and parents can respond in their preferred language. TalkingPoints supports 125 languages, making it easier and faster for our FCPS families to connect with their schools. If you need to update your preferred correspondence language, please contact the front office at your student's school.
