Franklin Families and Students…

Good afternoon!

It is exciting to include the photos found above in a message like this to highlight all of the different types of learning that is taking place at Franklin Middle School. We are constantly aspiring to keep all of our students at the center of what we do at FMS every single day. In doing that, we challenge ourselves to give every student the opportunity to feel a sense of ownership over their own learning and engage with the world around them in authentic ways. The partnership between our staff, our students, and all of you is helping make that a reality. We still have lots of work to do, but we will continue to grow every single day.

We are excited that next week will be our first Spirit Week of the year. The students in our new Leadership elective have been hard at work planning activities that will help us demonstrate our Falcon Spirit. You can find the schedule of events below.

Our 8th grade civics students we be engaging in another authentic learning opportunity with the upcoming Finance Park field trip. We are still looking for parent volunteers to be a part of the event. Please see the information below with more details about signing up.

Finally, I wanted to put a spotlight on a great opportunity for our community to come together and support our PTA at the same time. Mark your calendar now for double Dining for Dollars event on Nov. 17 at Piero’s and Baskin Robbins in Franklin Farm. Thank you for supporting our PTA and we hope to see you there!

I am always available for your questions, concerns, and feedback at dpwright@fcps.edu.

Thank you for all that you do to support your student.

With Gratitude,

Dustin Wright

Principal

Caution: One Chip Challenge

At Franklin MS, we have seen an increasing number of students participating in the “one chip challenge.” This challenge involves eating an extremely spicy chip that often causes extreme burning/pain/watery eyes/vomiting, etc. When students are completing this challenge, it is a safety concern and is disruptive to the school environment. Please encourage your child to NOT participate in this challenge and not to bring this chip to school. It is sold in a package as an individually wrapped chip in a coffin shaped box with the brand Paqui.

Digital Citizenship Week

This week, October 17-21, FCPS is taking part in Digital Citizenship Week. During the school day, we will be sharing quick tips and resources with students on various Digital Citizenship topics. Students also took part in a Digital Citizenship lesson during Falcon Time on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Subjects shared with students this week include:

  • Maintaining healthy digital habits
  • Dealing with digital drama
  • Staying safe online
  • Examining our digital footprint
  • Evaluating how social media impacts our daily lives

Common Sense Education has many resources available for families. The video series, Digital Connections helps families start conversations with their kids about using technology safely and responsibly.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.

The surveys were given out during Falcon Time this week. Please be sure to complete and sign the survey and have your child return the original (fax or email copies may not be sent) to their Falcon Time teacher no later than Friday, November 4. If you have any questions, please contact Kristine Smith.

Fairfax County Youth Survey

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The survey is given to all students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 each fall. It provides a wealth of information about a variety of topics related to our youth that influence their physical and mental well being, from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors to symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts. Franklin will administer the survey to 8th grade students on November 9 and 10. If you would like for your student to opt-out of the survey, you may complete an opt-out form and email it to your student’s school counselor.
