Principal's Message

Good afternoon, Eagle Community,

Happy Diwali to those families who will be celebrating on Monday, October 24, 2022. We hope you are able to connect with family and friends during this time. May your Diwali be full of fun, lights, and sweet treats!

Thank you to all of the amazing parent volunteers who made our 7th grade Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience field trip a huge success! The students had many chilly days on the water at Cub Run and learned lots about our local watershed. Our science teachers did a wonderful job organizing this huge event that lasted all week. Be sure to ask your 7th grader what their favorite part of the day was!

For parents who bring students to school in the mornings, either by choice or if a student misses the bus, we need to bring a few reminders to you. First, this time of year is very dark in the mornings. Remember, our staff does NOT begin to unload until 7:10 AM to allow staff time to park and enter the building safely without cars moving in the front lanes. Do not allow your child out earlier to sit in front of the school, as they are not supervised, and it is very cold this time of year. Walkers and bike riders should not plan to arrive until after 7:10 AM when doors are open. Parents should pull all the way up in the line as they wait for staff to direct them to unload. Thank you for keeping all staff and students safe.

Our after school programming and tutoring is very successful! We have been in the top 5 of all middle schools each week for attendance with 250-300 kids on late bus days. We are hopeful to be in first place after this week’s totals are calculated. This year, we do have Friday late buses for the first time! Be sure to check your child’s teacher’s stay-late day to get free help.

As a reminder, please take a moment to log into ParentVue in your child’s SIS account to access the SR&R. Signatures were due by September 30. Please complete this form today as we currently still need half of our families to complete this task. Visit the SIS Parentvue Account Overview page for help logging in to your account. Please contact us at 703-934-2400 if you are having difficulty accessing the booklet.

In closing, get out there this weekend and enjoy the beautiful colors of fall! I recently went to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the brilliance of the leaves is breathtaking.

Sincerely,

Tammy Silipigni,

Principal

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

pic

On October 20, the Student-Parent Survey for Impact Aid form was given to your child during their 9th period class.  Please ask them for the form.  It may be down at the bottom of their back packs.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Calendar Reminder

Looking Ahead: Monday, October 24 (Student holiday/Staff Development Day)

As a reminder, Friday, October 28, is the last day of the first quarter, and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools are closed for students on Monday, October 31, for a teacher workday. See the complete 2022-23 School Year Calendar.

Fairfax County Youth Survey- 8th Graders Only

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The results of this survey are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported. This survey is only for 8th grade students.

The survey will be administered between November 7 and November 22, 2022, during a time of day determined by your child's school administration. A copy of the survey will be available to parents and/or guardians on line at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/youth-survey and in the school counseling office of your child's school beginning October 7, 2022. If you do not wish for your child to take part in the survey, click on the FCPS webpage to access the opt out form.

Please turn in the opt out form to your child's school counselor no later than November 7, 2022.

Opportunity for Students to Help Inform FCPS’ Future

You may have heard FCPS is developing a Strategic Plan that will serve as the school division’s roadmap for the future. We encourage every parent/caregiver, student, employee, and community member to participate in this important work.

The first engagement opportunity will be an optional survey, which will be open to students in grades 3-12. Knowing what is important to students will be very helpful to Dr. Reid, as she leads the planning of FCPS’ future. All schools, including ours, will schedule a date and time during the school day to administer the survey between November 2-18. If you would prefer that your child not participate, you may opt your child out of taking the survey. Please visit FCPS’ website for more information

Schools Adopt Text and Translation Platform

FCPS has recently approved the use of TalkingPoints, a two-way messaging app that allows parents and caregivers to communicate with teachers and schools. For more information, visit the FCPS TalkingPoints webpage.

The app translates messages, so teachers can input messages in English, and parents can respond in their preferred language. TalkingPoints supports 125 languages, making it easier and faster for our FCPS families to connect with their schools. If you need to update your preferred correspondence language, please contact Andrea Holmes, our registrar at aholmes@fcps.edu.
