Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

What a fun week!  From start to finish, we had fun all around!  A HUGE thank you to our PE teachers, Mrs. Udasco and Mrs. Opsahl for organizing such a fun day and a HUGE thanks to the PTA and all of our field day volunteers who made our field day a great success!  Stenwood has the most amazing and supportive families.  We are truly grateful and humbled by the amount of support we had for our special day.  Mrs. Brown Rice and I honored our promise and did our wacky principal stunt by dressing up in our bee costumes and participating in the field day activities.  If you need a laugh, feel free to watch our montage, we know that other parents also captured some great video of our attempts.  Feel free to connect with our Jackie Krum, jekrum@fcps.edu so we can add to the fun.

The wildlife assemblies sponsored by PTA were a hit!  The misfits came out over the course of three days so that each grade level had an opportunity to learn about them and ask questions.  If you haven’t had a chance, make sure to ask your children about the four misfits that came to visit (and luckily went back with their caretakers).

Today our building was filled with some amazing book characters!  We loved seeing students be able to quickly identify so many characters, it shows how much we love reading here at Stenwood.

We are very excited to welcome back Dr. Mitchell from maternity leave next Tuesday and sad to say goodbye to Mrs. Brown Rice.  We are so appreciative to her and Timber Lane for allowing us to borrow her for the last couple of months.  She will be here for her final day on Tuesday.

A reminder that Monday is a holiday in observance of Diwali.

Supporting Your Child in a Digital World

Supporting Your Child With Common FCPS Digital Tools

Week 7: Schoology

HH Pic

FCPS has entered its second year (third year for Stenwood, we were part of the pilot program!) using Schoology as its Learning Management System.  Schoology allows parents to view their child’s courses, see school updates, upcoming assignments and tests, assignments graded within Schoology and your child’s activity.

Note, some assignments may utilize Google Workspace, if so, parents are able to view assignment directions and due dates, but not the item itself (think Google Slides, Docs, Sheets, etc.). If you would like to view these items, your child will need to sign into their FCPS Google Account

Parents use their SIS login credentials to access Schoology.  Don’t have a SIS account? Contact our registrar, Mrs. Hunt to activate your account.

To learn more about Schoology, visit the Welcome FCPS Parents and Guardians to Schoology page.  Have questions about how to use Schoology? Reach out to our SBTS, Ms. Krum.

Please note, official grade records are kept in SIS.  Grades within Schoology will not reflect your child’s final grades.

Federal Impact Aid Form Due Now - Reminder

FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. We will be sending home our forms on 10/19.  Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your Stenwood by Friday, 10/21. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned. All results are confidential. If you have not completed it, please do so this weekend and send it in on Tuesday.

The Storybook Pumpkin Festival Is Coming!

Pumpkin Festival

It’s that time of year again, where students can share their love of books by decorating a pumpkin as a favorite storybook character.  Students can decorate a pumpkin (one small enough for them to carry) and bring it to the library anytime between October 17th-28th where it will be on display for all to see.

Students should also include a “clue card” with 3 clues for everyone to guess the character and book.  On the reverse side of the card should be the answer along with the student’s name.  You can find the official guidelines and a slide show of previous years’ pumpkins in the Library Schoology Course.

PS…please don’t carve the pumpkins!  As always, contact Mrs. Cole with any questions you might have.
