Shari HIrsch

Dear Poplar Tree Families,

We wanted to share with all of you that Mrs. Shari Hirsch, school counselor, is retiring. After 19 years at Poplar Tree, her last day will be November 30. As a school, we will celebrate her during her last week. Mrs. Hirsch has begun sharing this information with the students and we wanted to make sure you all knew as well. She has had a tremendous impact on students and families throughout the years and will be missed! We have started searching for a replacement. Mrs. Hirsch leaves big shoes to fill and we appreciate your patience as we try to find the best match for the position. Mrs. Mertens, our full-time counselor, will assist all students at Poplar Tree during this transition time.

Have a wonderful weekend!

What is Red Ribbon Week?

Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Mexican-American man working for the DEA after serving in the Marine Corps, being a fireman, police officer, and deputy sheriff in California. While on assignment in Mexico for four years, he was on the trail of the country’s biggest marijuana and cocaine traffickers. He was getting close to exposing a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline in 1985, until he was kidnapped that February. He was headed to lunch with his wife when he was last seen being thrown into a van by masked men, his body wasn’t discovered until a month later. After his death, “Camarena Clubs” were launched in his hometown of Calexico, California. Hundreds wore red ribbons and pledged to lead a drug-free life in his honor. Then President Ronald Reagan was in office, so club members presented a proclamation to First Lady Nancy Reagan which brought it national attention. The campaign became official in 1988by the National Family Partnership with President Reagan and “Just Say No” creator Mrs. Reagan as honorary chairpersons. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually from October 23-31st.

At Poplar Tree ES, will be sharing a short video about Red Ribbon week with our students at the end of GMPT on Tuesday.  Students in grades 5 and 6 will be invited to sign a pledge in support of Red Ribbon week and bring the pledge home for parents to sign as well.  Thank you for your support in having open conversations with your child about making safe and healthy choices.

Impact Aid Forms

Beginning October 18, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education.
These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school.
If Sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.
All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All responses are confidential.
