THANK YOU!
On behalf of the Mclean Matters committee, we would like to thank the parents and teachers for their generous donations of backpacks, calculators, and school supplies for the McLean High School students-in-need. The Charity Wish List and Sign-Up are complete! The Fall 2022 Backpacks and Calculators Drive was overwhelmingly successful due to the generosity of the parent community and several local vendors. We collected donations of 100 backpacks and 70 graphing calculators, valued at approximately $11,000. We also want to thank our local Walmart, Target, BJ’s, and Costco for their donations of school supplies and toiletries, valued at approximately $1,000.
We were able to prepare 100 new backpacks, each stuffed with new school supplies, including 3-ring binders, looseleaf paper, dividers, spiral notebooks, index cards, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, highlighters, and more. The McLean High School work study students (pictured below) were essential in organizing the finished backpacks to get them ready for the counselors to distribute to the students-in-need. Thank you to our generous community for all your efforts!

Student Achievement
Marching Band Success
McLean High School's Marching Band had a very busy weekend! They performed at the VBODA State Assessment on Saturday morning, receiving a Superior Rating from all seven judges in all captions. Superior is the highest rating possible.
Following their assessment, the Marching Band travelled to Virignia Beach where they performed at the VMBC Tidewater Regional Championship and were awarded third place. Go Highlanders!
Eagle Scout Project
Thank you to McLean High School student John Kirk for completing his Eagle Scout project, which was to install a walkway that goes from McLean Swim to our front parking lot. The path looks great and is a major upgrade! Congratulations, John!
Highlander Newsmagazine and WMHS News Broadcast Finalists Announced
The National Scholastic Press Association announced their list of news and broadcast Pacemaker finalists, and both The Highlander newsmagazine and WMHS News broadcast from McLean High School have been selected for this prestigious honor. Since 1927, NSPA's Pacemaker competition has been considered by many to be student journalism's highest honor. Just 38 newspapers/newsmagazines and 21 broadcast programs are finalists this year, and McLean High School is the only school in Virginia to be named a finalist in either category! Lindsay Benedict is the adviser of both publications. The Highlander’s 2021-22 editors-in-chief Maya Amman, Josh Bass and Aleena Gul and 2021-22 WMHS News producers Kate Burke and Arman Nikmorad led their respective publications to success. Winners will be announced during the fall journalism convention in St. Louis on Nov. 12, 2022.
