Walk to School

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Spring Hill Families,

We've enjoyed a great week of learning after leading the week with a staff professional development workday. Staff engaged in PD around the updated Virginia Department of Education evaluation standards. On Wednesday, our students participated in Walk to School Day. And today, we ended the week with our school-wide responsive classroom morning meeting. Click here for some pictures from today's morning meeting.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) posted the results of its 2021-22 Family Engagement Survey, which includes information specific to Spring Hill Elementary School.

We are proud that families at Spring Hill reported:

  • 96 percent feel "my child feels safe at school."
  • 96 percent feel “The school is safe.”
  • 93 percent feel "There is opportunities for me to volunteer at my child’s school.”
  • 92 percent feel "I feel welcome at my child’s school."
  • 91 percent feel "The school welcomes families of different backgrounds and cultures."

Have a great weekend.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 18, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Unity Day - October 19

We are excited to share with you that our school community will be celebrating Unity Day on Wednesday, October 19th this year. Unity Day is an annual event occurring during National Bullying Prevention Month in October that promotes joining together to create healthier communities through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. It was started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in 2011 and is now celebrated around the world. The color associated with Unity Day is orange.  We encourage students, faculty, staff, and community members to wear orange on October 19th to show that we are united against bullying.  We hope you’ll take this opportunity to talk to your children about bullying prevention and all the positive things we can do to make healthier communities. For more information on the history of Unity Day and its impact, please go to https://www.PACER.org/bullying/about/history.asp.

Superintendent Community Conversations

Dr. Michelle Reid will continue to host Superintendent Community Conversations across the division through November to get to know our communities. Events are being scheduled at high schools in each pyramid at 6:30-7:30 p.m. Schools will share registration information with families and employees in advance of each event. See the list of events that have been scheduled.

The save the date for the Langley Pyramid is 10/26/22.

Family Nutrition Tip of the Week

Fill up on Fiber

Fiber plays a key role in protecting your body from heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers; not to mention promoting (ahem) regularity. Children and adults need at least 25-35 grams of per day. Fiber (a.k.a. "roughage") is primarily found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans/legumes.

  • Choose grain-based products that list a "whole" grain as the first ingredient (not "enriched flour" or "wheat flour")
  • Eat lots of whole fruits and vegetables instead of juices, and eat the skins which are high in fiber
  • Replace meat with beans or legumes in recipes a couple of times a week
  • Top yogurt with almonds, flax seeds, or chia seeds
