Franklin Families and Students…
Good afternoon! It is Homecoming Week in the Chantilly Pyramid and we want to cheer on the Chargers at the football game tonight. I will be participating in the CHS Homecoming Parade this afternoon. It starts at 4:30 PM in the Greenbriar Shopping Center and I hope to see you there!
I also wanted to provide a few reminders to ensure that all of our students who decide to attend the game tonight have a successful and fun experience. If your student plans to attend a varsity football game on a Friday Night at a FCPS High School, they must be accompanied by an adult who supervises them for the duration of the event. If your student attempts to attend without at least one adult, they will be turned away at the ticket booth. Also, there are no backpacks/food/drink/athletic equipment allowed in the stadiums. We love when our future high school students attend our games and hope they are good representatives of our community. At the conclusion of the game, all spectators are expected to leave in a timely fashion.
Finally, I wanted to spotlight an opportunity for our community to contribute to the recognition of the amazing staff at Franklin Middle School. This is the time of year when the Employee Recognition process begins, and we need your help! Additional information about recognizing an outstanding educator can be found below.
I am always available for your questions, concerns, and feedback at dpwright@fcps.edu. Our team is here to support you and your student.
Best wishes for an enjoyable and relaxing Fall weekend.
Sincerely,
Dustin Wright
Principal

The Grade 8 Civics students will be participating in a trip to Finance Park in early November. Finance park is an experiential educational field trip in which 8th grade Civics students get to try their hand at developing and planning a monthly budget. We are looking for parent volunteers for each of the dates listed below. Volunteers will help guide students through different phases of the day, which simulate real-world budgeting decisions, spending research, and bill payment. If you are interested in learning more, please fill out the Finance Park Parent Interest Form or contact your child’s Civics teacher.
SEL (Social Emotional Learning) Screener
All students in grades 3-12 will participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. Screener data will help staff plan interventions for students with identified needs. Parents and guardians will also receive an individualized report regarding their student’s screener results following each assessment window in SIS ParentVUE.
At Franklin Middle School, the SEL Screener will be given to all students on October 18 and 19 through their social studies classes. If you do not want your student to take part in the SEL screener, please return the opt-out form below to your child’s school counselor or complete the opt-out via your SIS ParentVUE account no later than Monday, October 17.

More information, including a short video about the SEL screener in FCPS and the screener questions, can be found on the SEL Screener webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43892). Please contact Kathryn Thurston, School Test Coordinator, or your child’s school counselor with questions.
Fairfax County Youth Survey
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The survey is given to all students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 each fall. It provides a wealth of information about a variety of topics related to our youth that influence their physical and mental well being, from sleep and nutritional habits to substance abuse behaviors to symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts. Franklin will administer the survey to 8th grade students on November 9 and 10. If you would like for your student to opt-out of the survey, you may complete an opt-out form and email it to your student’s school counselor.

All Franklin students are welcome to join the After School Program. We have already had over 300 students participate in clubs and activities. If your student has not yet participated, it’s not too late! Most activities are drop in and your child will not need to sign up in advance. Our late bus days are Mondays - Thursdays. Indoor Soccer will start on Tuesday, October 18. There will also be a Student Council Association interest meeting on Thursday, October 20. The interest meeting is open to all students who are interested in being a part of Franklin's SCA. The schedule for next week can be found here. For questions regarding the After School Program, please email Mrs. Mollé.
Vision and Hearing Screening on October 17 and 18
Vision and Hearing Screening will be held on October 17 and 18 for all 7th grade students and students who are new to FCPS. If your student wears glasses, please be sure they bring their glasses to school on both screening days. The purpose of screening is to identify students who may need further evaluation due to difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tone. Parents will be notified by letter only if screening results indicate that further testing is needed. Prompt follow-up of a referral is recommended. Please contact Donna Long with any questions.
Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid
The Impact Aid Program is a federal grant program designed to directly compensate local school districts that have been financially impacted by federal activities. The program's mission is to reimburse local school districts for local revenues lost due to the presence of federally owned and therefore tax-exempt property. Your support in identifying students with federal connections will ensure that FCPS can obtain its fair share of grant funds from this program.
The surveys will go home during Falcon Time the week of October 17th. Please be sure to complete and sign the survey and have your child return the original (fax or email copies may not be sent) to their Falcon Time teacher no later than Friday, November 4th. If you have any questions, please contact Kristine Smith.
