News and Notes

Congratulations Assistant Principal Hutchinson!

AP Hutchinson

Congratulations to Ms. Hutchison who received an FCPS Excellence award for her positive impact on student achievement at Brookfield Elementary School. We are so proud of her recognition and thankful for her dedication and support of our Bronco Community!

Join the Principals for a Coffee

We will be hosting a Parent Coffee on Monday, October 31st, to introduce you to Margaret Sisler (new assistant principal), celebrate student learning and answer any questions you might have.  Building strong connections with our families is important to us and enhances the work we do as a school.  We hope you will swing by for coffee and light refreshments as you attend teacher conferences in the building from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m.

Please stop by the cafeteria between 8:30 - 10:00 for coffee, light refreshments and conversation!

Impact Aid Forms: We Need Your Help!

Beginning on October 18, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 4. All results are confidential.

Visiting Our Cafeteria

As you join our students for lunch please help us cultivate a safe, nurturing, and caring environment in our cafeteria. We ask that you model and reinforce the following cafeteria guidelines:

Walk at all times.

  • Use voice level two (conversation voice)
  • Use kind words with everyone.
  • Remain in your space.
  • Keep your space clean.

Thank you!

October is Bullying Awareness Month

October is Bullying Awareness month, and it is important to distinguish between rude, mean behaviors and bullying so that teachers, school administrators, families and kids all know what to pay attention to and when to get involved. Mean behaviors can hurt deeply, and adults can make a huge difference in the lives of young people when they hold kids accountable for being mean. Yet, meanness is different from bullying in important ways that should be understood, especially when it comes to support or intervention.

Rude

From kids, rudeness might look more like burping in someone's face, jumping ahead in line, bragging about earning the highest grade or even throwing a crushed-up pile of leaves in someone's face. Incidents of rudeness are usually impulsive, unplanned inconsideration, based on thoughtlessness or poor manners, but not actually meant to hurt someone.

Mean

The main difference between "rude" and "mean" behavior has to do with intention; while rudeness is often unintentional, mean behavior aims to hurt someone. Very often, mean behavior in kids is motivated by angry feelings. Meanness in kids might sound like:

  • "Are you seriously wearing that sweater again? Didn't you just wear it, like, last week? Get a life."
  • "You are so fat/ugly/stupid."
  • "I hate you!"

Bullying in FCPS’ Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as:  “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

Please help us to accurately assist your students; we want to support them in situations of rude, mean, or bullying behavior. Talk with them to determine what exactly is happening and empower them to speak to an adult accurately so we can take care of them in the best way possible.

Thanks, as always, for your partnership.

Critical and Creative Thinking Strategies

CCT Analogies

October is Analogy Month! Analogies are a powerful teaching and learning tool because they build upon the brain's natural inclination to draw connections and comparisons as we learn new material.

Check out this link to the Critical and Creative Thinking Strategies and see them in action in a classroom.
