culturally responsive principles

The above graphic references the guiding principles for culturally responsive teaching; it is asset-based, supports and challenges students, places students at the center of learning, leverages students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and it unites schools, families, and communities.

Dear Centre Ridge Community,

Thank you, again, to all those who attended our Title I presentation. Seeing our families in-person and online reflects our connectedness as a community and promotes our shared understanding of schoolwide aims. We continue to be grateful for your ongoing support and investment in the education of your children!

Today was a significant day of learning for our staff. We enhanced our understanding of culturally responsive classroom practices to support all learners. In addition, we had a special presentation from members of our indigenous community, The Mayan League. As today was Indigenous Peoples' Day, this was certainly a timely and auspicious occasion for learning more about the students and families we serve.

We look forward to continuing to share our story with you each week. Thank you for contributing to our narrative through your involvement and partnership. We look forward to seeing you soon at our PTA's next event, BINGO Night, on October 21st!

Warmly,

Dr. Hertzberg, Ms. Wu, and Ms. Baugh

Centre Ridge at Homecoming

We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do!

We demonstrated an incredible amount of school spirit while participating in Centreville High School's Homecoming Parade. We spread our cheer and enthusiasm wherever we go!

A special thank you to our patrol sponsor, Katie Travis, as well as our many staff members who attended and chaperoned the festivities (Ms. Schrickel, Ms. Stratford, Ms. Scharkowski, and Mr. Chung). We had several parents who marched alongside us--which was entirely awesome! Molly Henry, our strings teacher, made a cameo appearance as Ronnie Ram. She is a rockstar!

Disability History and Awareness Month

Disability History and Awareness Month

During October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.

The following modules are designed to provide background information on the self-determination movement for people with disabilities and the history of the Virginia Department of Education’s "I’m Determined Project." Check out our DedicatED section for additional resources and information!

We look forward to highlighting learning experiences that support the acquisition of Portrait of a Graduate attributes and skills across our classrooms.

These students love learning to the core! Making applesauce from scratch helps us learn about following directions and allows us to see that effort can lead to a delicious outcome!

Museum of disABILITY History

DedicatED: For Parents and Teachers

Being an informed consumer of knowledge prepares you to be the very best advocate for your child. All parents, regardless of their child's abilities, are their child's first and last teacher, and this notion means it is increasingly important to learn how to successfully advocate and partner with your child's school.

For parents of students with disabilities, navigating the school system can be a bit more challenging, as the impact of your child's disability, special education, and specialized instruction, may not be easily understood.

Learning more about the history of disability and related policy can support you in your journey to becoming an informed parent and partner in your child's education. Please consider visiting the following website to learn more about the history of disability and how you can support inclusion.

There are several sections to view on this site. Click into the “Virtual Museum” section and learn about the role of media, medicine, society, and advocacy in disability policy and practices.

Which section affected you?  What makes you say that?

Dyslexia

Dyslexia Awareness Month

The Parent Resource Center will host an open house for parents to learn more about dyslexia and how to support your child on October 20th from 4-6 pm. Learn more about PRC events on their website.

The FCPS Dyslexia handbook also provides information and resources to families. It reflects a division-wide commitment to ensure that the needs of students with dyslexia are met as a result of collective responsibility and collaboration across general and special education contexts.
