CAVS VARSITY SPORTS

Varsity Field Hockey

The Cavaliers posted a 3-0 record in an action-packed week, with wins over Lake Braddock, Alexandria City, and Robinson. The Cavs defeated Lake Braddock 2-0 on Monday, with Julia Oleyar delivering the two goals on a chilly rain-soaked pitch. Caitlin Tran set up the first goal by sending a pass from the top of the penalty arc, finding Oleyar posting up near the goalie who then turned and shot past her. Reese Cuviello set up the second goal with a beautiful penalty corner injection pass that Oleyar slammed home.

On Thursday’s Senior Night, Woodson upended Alexandria City 2-1 in double overtime Elizabeth Stribling scored by redirecting Julia Oleyar’s pass into the goal to end the game. Kim McNamara scored Woodson’s first goal from a pass by Reese Cuviello.

The Cavaliers ran past Robinson 4-1 on Saturday to cap the week. Kim McNamara scored the first goal from a pass by Reese Cuviello to give Woodson a 1-0 lead. Levi Weinberger made a nice run to prevent a breakaway goal before the half.  The Cavs started the second half with Genna Cooke intercepting a Robinson pass and pushing the ball to Julia Oleyar who rammed it passed the goalkeeper.  Caitlin Tran scored Woodson’s third goal off of a rebounded shot.  Elizabeth Stribling scored the Cavs’ fourth goal by corralling the loose ball in a penalty corner scrum and knocking it into the goal.

Varsity Volleyball

The Cavs had a good week in volleyball last week, beating Fairfax and South County by 3-0 each.  Sabina Niedrick was the standout player of the week, earning Player of the Game for both nights.  Emma Gardner, Maura Fay, and Carissa Norico had great nights on offense, Stella Gilligan had great performances at libero, and a special shoutout to our setters, Aubree Reasor, Charlotte Kao, and Sofie Ferrell for the great work they do.

Join us tonight for Senior Night, honoring our 12th graders in their final year.

AP Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees

As part of the FCPS FY 2022 Approved Budget, FCPS is continuing to assess Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees. As in previous years, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form to be provided by the school. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment. AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by Friday, October 21st and parents will be billed a $96 non-refundable test fee in December 2022 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests.

2023 AP Testing

Reference the College Board 2023 AP exam dates site for dates of AP Exams.  All 2023 AP exams will be taken in school and most will be taken in a paper/pencil format.

Your Voice is Needed: FCPS Strategic Planning

Our Voices Our Future

Fairfax County Public Schools launched the engagement phase for developing our brand new Strategic Plan 2023-2028

Superintendent Michelle Reid has heard from many of you about your hopes and aspirations for our students. That feedback will become part of our proactive strategic plan that will serve as our North Star—or guide—for the future.

The entire FCPS community is invited to engage in building our shared future. This includes hearing from parents and caregivers, students, and broader community, as well as surveying students in grades three and above. You will have an opportunity to have your voice heard in one of many sessions (both in-person and virtual) during November and December. We encourage you to join in this journey by actively participating in the conversation.

The goal is to have the final strategic plan by June 2023. For a more detailed overview, visit FCPS’ Strategic Planning 2023 webpage.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

If you would like to view the FLE materials, please fill out this form.  Blair Smith, Director of Student Activities, will set up a time for you to come in and view hard copies for each grade level of FLE materials.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, please complete the opt-out forms located on the FCPS website. Completed opt-out forms can be returned to the school main office.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at High School (9-12).
