Message from Dr. Floyd

Hello Woodson Families!

Have you decompressed from the excitement of Homecoming yet? The HoCo Disco was a huge success with over 1,400 tickets sold.

Many thanks to all the parent volunteers who came out to support the event and help to ensure students had indoor and outdoor space to celebrate. We could not have pulled this off with out you!

Over half the school took either the PSAT or the SAT this past Wednesday.  Some families have inquired as to whether or not this test is really necessary anymore for college. Our response to this is: ask the colleges of interest as each are different. Your child’s school counselor as well as Ms. Lieb-Mosley, cliebmosley@fcps.edu, in the College and Career Center are available for meetings and discussions around topics related to life after high school, please reach out!

One of my favorite parts of leading a high school is seeing our students participate in activities that they love. Kudos to our choir students on a tremendous pyramid concert last night! We have talented kids and amazing directors, Ms. Moir and Mr. Quinlan, Woodson HS; Ms. Lee, Frost MS, Ms. Hood and Ms. Gaskins, Fairfax Villa ES; Ms. Cruse, Olde Creek ES; Mx. Van Keuren and Ms. Gorokhivska, Canterbury Woods ES; Ms. Aberle and Mr. Blydenburgh, Mantua ES; and, Ms. Waggoner and Ms. Hibbits, Wakefield Forest ES.

I encourage all students to find their passion and pursue it; explore different clubs and activities at Woodson until the right one fits. Want to make your own? Ms. Pollack will help! Email her at sepollack@fcps.edu

Have a wonderful weekend,

Dr. Floyd
Principal

10. 2023 FAFSA Open—College Access Fairfax Is Here to Help

Parents of current high school seniors—did you know that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened on October 1?

Parents are encouraged to work with their students to complete the FAFSA as early as possible—definitely before March 1, 2023—as you prepare for your child to begin college in the fall of 2023. Some schools have even earlier priority deadlines, so check the individual college’s financial aid office website for deadlines and specific forms to complete.

Parents and students should start by creating an FSA ID and then begin the FAFSA.The Virginia Alternative State Aid (VASA) application is available for students who are unable to complete the FAFSA. To help determine which aid option is right for you, visit the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia website.

Our partners at College Access Fairfax will be offering a number of programs on completing the FAFSA/VASA and finding/applying for scholarships over the next two months. Information on these programs and how to access them can be found at the College Access Fairfax website. In addition, College Access Fairfax staff are available for virtual one-on-one help sessions to complete the FAFSA/VASA. Interested families should email appointments@collegeaccessfairfax.org to request an appointment.

12. Attendance Procedures

Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.

If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office. Below is a quick guide for reporting all-day absences, late arrivals, and early check-outs from school.

13. FCPS Honors Nominations Open

It is that time of the year again!  Nominate our outstanding staff for FCPS Honors!

We put together a Google Doc with links for the separate Outstanding Employee Nomination Forms.  Click and nominate!  We appreciate your thoughtful consideration for these awards.  The deadline is Friday, October 28th.

14. AP Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees

As part of the FCPS FY 2022 Approved Budget, FCPS is continuing to assess Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test fees. As in previous years, the fees for the first six AP/IB tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit will be paid for by FCPS. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fee(s).

FCPS encourages all students to take AP tests for courses in which they are enrolled. However, students will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form to be provided by the school. To assist in the decision-making process, students will be provided a report with their previous tests and current AP course enrollment. AP students must make Opt-Out decisions by Friday, October 21st and parents will be billed a $96 non-refundable test fee in December 2022 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests.

2023 AP Testing

Reference the College Board 2023 AP exam dates site for dates of AP Exams.  All 2023 AP exams will be taken in school and most will be taken in a paper/pencil format.

If you have any questions, please contact Woodson's Assessment Coordinator, Kathleen Crosson at kpcrosson@fcps.edu.

15. AP Exams for Students Not Enrolled in AP Courses

Woodson HS offers AP tests for students not enrolled in AP classes based on seat availability/test room capacity.

Non-enrolled students wanting to take the AP test will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The cost for each exam is $96.00.

Registration forms are available in Student Services. The deadline to register is Friday, October 21st.

16. DMV Learners Permit Tests at Woodson

Woodson is pleased to announce that students can take the Virginia DMV learner’s permit test at Woodson. Students will use their school issued laptops and will be given a login just as they do for the SOL tests. If they do NOT have a school laptop, they must contact Mr. O'Hara ahead of time because personal laptops do NOT work for the test. Students will be eligible to test if they are 15 years 6 months or older on the following Tuesdays at 3:15pm in Room C108:

October 18th, December 13th, February  21st, April 25th, May 23rd

Steps to complete the process: You must register in TWO places: ACE (for payment) and DMV for the test ticket.

  • Payment: First you must register through the ACE and pay $20.
  • Register for this test event at DMV Registration (Internet Explorer 9 or higher or Safari).
  • A customer number is not required, but if you have a DMV ID card you must enter the name, DOB and customer number exactly as it appears on your DMV ID card. Otherwise, enter your full legal name and date of birth and leave the customer number field blank.
  • Please provide a parent or student’s email to receive registration confirmation, test results, notification of changes to the date and time or cancellation of the test event.
  • Before taking the two part knowledge test, please STUDY the Driver’s Manual located on DMV’s web site.
