Stenwood Hive Happenings

Hive Happenings Newsletter

Dear Stenwood Families,

We have an exciting week ahead of us!  Next week is Digital Citizenship Week.  It is a great opportunity for us to be reminded on how to practice elements of being a good responsible user of technology.  We know that we did not grow up surrounded by the technology our children have access to today.  So, as parents and teachers we need to help our children navigate using technology safely and learn while we are doing it.  Mrs. Krum, our amazing SBTS has been including resources and information in the last several Hive Happenings.

Next Tuesday, we will have our annual field day!  The weather looks chilly, but at least dry!  Mrs. Brown Rice and I will be honoring our promise for the wacky principal stunt and will be participating in some of the fun in our bee costumes!  We promise to take lots of pictures and videos so you can enjoy the fun too!

Finally, our PTA has also arranged for another round of wildlife assemblies.  These were a huge hit last year with our students and staff.  Your child will get to enjoy an assembly one afternoon next week.

If your family uses Kiss N’ Ride, please review the reminders we included below.

Attendance Reminders

If you need to report your child being absent, there 3 easy ways (these all can also be found at the bottom of our Stenwood homepage for easy future use):

When reporting your child(ren)’s absence, please make sure to give specific symptoms if your child is ill.  We are required to report these to the clinic, so this will save you time so we don’t have to call you back.

Kiss N’ Ride Reminders

Some reminders from our Parent Handbook regarding student drop off and using Kiss N’ Ride.  These are in place for safety reasons.  We respectfully ask that you follow these if choosing to use Kiss N’ Ride.

  • Pull forward as far as possible before loading or unloading and drivers should remain in their car.
  • If your child is still in a car seat or child restraint, please practice with your child so they can begin to become independent in getting out of their seat.
  • Load and unload from the passenger side of the car only.
  • Do not pass other cars that are loading or unloading.
  • Do not park in the Kiss N’ Ride lane and leave your car unattended.
  • Do not park on the other side of the street and call to children.
  • Exit the Kiss N’ Ride promptly after loading or unloading children.
  • Look carefully for students who may be crossing the street.
  • Be considerate to our neighbors who live in our Kiss N’ Ride area.
  • In the afternoon, do not park along Carnegie Drive and wait for your child. This adds to traffic congestion.

Car riders must use the Kiss N’ Ride area on Citadel Place behind the school. For safety reasons, the front driveway is restricted to bus traffic in the morning and afternoon. Parents are not permitted to drop students off or use the circular driveway in front of the school.

If you arrive to Kiss N’ Ride after 8:38, you will need to drive around to the front of the school, park, and sign your child in.

Digital Citizenship Week

Digital Citizenship Week is next week (October 17th-21st).  Ten years ago, Common Sense Education started Digital Citizenship Week to highlight the importance of helping kids, families, and teachers navigate our 24/7 digital world. Over those 10 years, media and technology have changed dramatically. There have also been big shifts in the ways we teach and learn in today's classrooms.  Next week, we will have Spirit Days, each day has a  theme aligned with Digital Citizenship.

Week 6: FCPS Tech Support

HH Pic

Sometimes technology doesn’t always work the way it’s supposed to, creating challenges or frustration for the user.  Whether your child uses their FCPS device or uses a personal device at home for school work, they may need technical support. Families can visit the FCPS Tech Support page for help with:

▪️  Zoom  ▪️  Passwords  ▪️  Sound/Camera  ▪️  Schoology  ▪️  Tutor.com  ▪️ Computer Microphone

Parents can also call the FCPS Parent Technology Help Desk at 833-921-3277.  Phones are answered by staff members between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Federal Impact Aid Form - Coming Home Wednesday 10/19

Beginning on October 18th, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. We will be sending home our forms on 10/19.  Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your Stenwood by Friday, 10/21. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned. All results are confidential.

The Storybook Pumpkin Festival Is Coming!

Pumpkin Festival

It’s that time of year again, where students can share their love of books by decorating a pumpkin as a favorite storybook character.  Students can decorate a pumpkin (one small enough for them to carry) and bring it to the library anytime between October 17th-28th where it will be on display for all to see.

Students should also include a “clue card” with 3 clues for everyone to guess the character and book.  On the reverse side of the card should be the answer along with the student’s name.  You can find the official guidelines and a slide show of previous years’ pumpkins in the Library Schoology Course.

PS…please don’t carve the pumpkins!  As always, contact Mrs. Cole with any questions you might have.
