CAVS VARSITY SPORTS
Varsity Field Hockey
The Cavaliers vanquished the Spartans of West Springfield 6-1 last Wednesday. Caitlin Tran and Genna Cooke set the tone for the team in the first minute of play, challenging passes and possessions. Their play resulted in Elizabeth Stribling scoring Woodson’s first goal. The Cavs kept pressure on the Spartans which paid off in the second quarter when a Caitlin Tran pass found Siena Niedrick running towards the goal, who then passed to Julia Oleyar, who scored the second goal. Ninety seconds later Reese Cuviello intercepted a Spartan pass and started a counterattack that ended with Caitlin Tran scoring the Cavs’ third goal. West Springfield answered with a score a few minutes later, but Julia Oleyar took a pass from Elizabeth Stribling and responded with Woodson’s fourth goal. The defense took command in the second half with Katie Robertson intercepting the Spartans’ initial center pass. Amanda Lee and Maddie Gaboury contributed defensive stops to keep the ball in the Spartan half of the field. Genna Cooke capitalized on the defensive containment by scoring in the fifth goal from an Elizabeth Stribling pass. Alex Walrath tallied Woodson’s sixth goal, via quick passes from Bethany Betts and Elizabeth Stribling.
This Thursday’s home game against Alexandria City is Senior Night, where we honor our 12 seniors. Come out and make some noise for the seniors!
Varsity Volleyball
Last week was rough for Varsity volleyball. Wednesday saw a hard match against West Potomac, with the Cavaliers losing 1-3, scoring 25-18, 25-27, 27-29, and 18-25. The team’s hard work on blocking paid off with 3 solo blocks, 12 block assists and 11 block touches with only 5 block errors. Shoutouts go to Maura Fay (Player of the Game with 21 kills and 12 digs), Emma Gardner, Sabina Niedrick, Aubree Reasor, and Stella Gilligan.
The Cavs then lost 0-3 to a very strong Robinson team on Thursday. Standout players were Nora Gilmer (Player of the Game with 8 kills and a 46.7% attack efficiency), Maura Fay, Emma Gardner, Stella Gilligan, Sabina Niedrick, and setters Sofia Ferrel and Clair Cho.
Next match is this Thursday at South County.
Varsity Cheer
Way to go CAVS! This past Saturday was the first cheer competition of the season, Our Varsity team took 2nd Place with a score of 228! Districts are coming up fast in October. JV Cheer
The JV team also participated in Saturday’s competition and placed 2nd with a score of 171, Congrats CAVS! Thanks to our Program & Head coach Krissy Schnebel, JV head coach Bri Thomas, Assist Coaches Kevin, James and Alayna!
Varsity Football
On Friday, September 23rd, the Woodson Cavaliers beat the Lancers of Lewis High School with a final score of 49-14. While 6 players were sidelined with injuries, our Cavs did not let this slow them down and the game started off with a touchdown by Ryan RIvera. This ignited a second TD by David Faulkner. Gabe Castro gave the Cavs their 3rd touchdown and Nate Lester had an amazing interception in the 2nd quarter of the game! Ryan Rivera scored his second touchdown, followed by David Faulkner’s second (and Woodson’s 5th of the game). Gabe Castro had some tricks up his jersey and pulled off a “Hat Trick” with the Cavaliers sixth and seventh touchdowns. Congrats Ryan! Wrapping up the game was a great fumble recovery by Matheo Rojas in the 4th quarter! Congratulations to all the members and coaches of the WTW Varsity Football team for a job well done!
On Friday, September 30th, the Cavaliers traveled to Centreville HIgh School to take on the Wildcats. The Cavs gave it their all but came up short, suffering a 63-0 loss on a chilly and wet evening.
The next challenge awaits the Cavaliers this coming Friday, September 7th, as they host the Stallions of South County High School for their Homecoming game. GOOD LUCK CAVS!

Your Voice is Needed: FCPS Strategic Planning
Fairfax County Public Schools launched the engagement phase for developing our brand new Strategic Plan 2023-2028.
Superintendent Michelle Reid has heard from many of you about your hopes and aspirations for our students. That feedback will become part of our proactive strategic plan that will serve as our North Star—or guide—for the future.
The entire FCPS community is invited to engage in building our shared future. This includes hearing from parents and caregivers, students, and broader community, as well as surveying students in grades three and above. You will have an opportunity to have your voice heard in one of many sessions (both in-person and virtual) during November and December. We encourage you to join in this journey by actively participating in the conversation.
The goal is to have the final strategic plan by June 2023. For a more detailed overview, visit FCPS’ Strategic Planning 2023 webpage.
