Annandale Community Insider - October 2

Annandale Students, Families, and Community:

Once again, Back to School Night was a tremendous success! The event was held on our stadium field, with many of our families joining us for conversations with teachers and staff. Many parents shared with me how grateful they were for the opportunity to meet with teachers and learn about ways they can support their students moving forward. I often say that Back to School Night is the most important event of the year next to graduation. This night highlights the ways we work together to support all of our students. Thank you to all who were able to attend! If you were not able to attend, please feel free to reach out to any of your student’s teachers for information about how they are progressing.

On Monday, we will hold our first W4 activities Day. We are excited to offer this experience for our students and look forward to increasing the ways to help our students feel connected to school. Last week, students had an opportunity to select their preference for this day. Assignments were made based on space, interest, and priority was given to students who do not have any tardies. Students received an email on Friday with their assignment for tomorrow.

Finally, this Thursday, October 6, we will begin PRIDE Time. To support our students’ diverse academic needs, students were assigned to either an Intervention PRIDE Time or a Study Hall PRIDE Time. Students will be able to view their PRIDE Time assignment in StudentVue as their period 11 class by Wednesday. Please ask your student about their PRIDE Time assignment and how they are using this time to their advantage.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions and Go Atoms!

Sincerely,

Shawn DeRose, Principal

Annandale Students Join Statewide Walkout: This past Tuesday, September 27 roughly 50 students walked out of school to bring awareness to the Governor's Proposed Model Policy. You can check out the WAMU article, ‘Trans rights are human rights’: NoVa students join statewide walkout over Youngkin’s school policy, which features Annandale High School. Annandale Junior, Tanya Dubey, was one of the organizers of the walkout and featured in the article.

Note: FCPS respects the rights of our students to engage in peaceful protest and express their opinions through speech and other ways as long as it is done respectfully, does not interfere with the rights of others, and does not disrupt learning in the school. Annandale is committed to providing an environment where everyone is treated with respect and encouraged to help others.

We will be receiving a very high volume of requests in the coming months, and our Student Services staff needs adequate time to process them. Students are limited to attending a total of 5 visits, so please only register for the colleges you are highly interested in learning about. *Please note that space is limited for some of these visits and you must register at least 24 hours in advance.

Once registered, students must get a pass from Mr. Yeagley in the College & Career Center (Room 103) after school the day before the visit or before school the morning of the visit and show it to their teacher. Students who do not register through Naviance, get a pass, and/or get permission from their teacher will not be admitted to the college visit.
