Dear Parents,
We had a great turn out for the PTA Family Movie night this past Friday evening. Despite the rainy weather, we were able to gather in the gym and it was wonderful to see so many of you! Thank you to the PTA for this great family event.
As you are checking in at the office whether you are volunteering your time, picking up or dropping off your student, consider giving one of our teachers some words of affirmation. There are post cards at the check in desk in the office for you to give a teacher a pat on the back. We will deliver the card to their mailbox. Words of affirmation mean a great deal to our staff and give them some acknowledgement of how hard they are working to make this year a great one for your child.
Congratulations to some of our current 5th and 6th grade students who researched Gunnell's Chapel last year and submitted their research to the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services. Their submission for Gunnell’s Chapel has been selected to become a Historical Marker sometime in the next year. Our students' proposal will become a physical marker that commemorates an important part of Fairfax County’s Black/African American History. Thank you to Ms. Gray and Ms. Duffield for organizing this meaningful project for their students last year.
This week we celebrate and show our appreciation for our custodians. Their hard work and pride in keeping Haycock clean and beautiful is evident when you drive by or when you enter the building.
Please note that this Wednesday, October 5 is a holiday for students and teachers.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Dr. Liz Beaty, Principal embeaty@fcps.edu
Heather Boyd, AP HABoyd@fcps.edu
Jody Delaney, AP jmdelaney@fcps.edu

Social and Emotional Activities and Screener Updates
Students in grades K-2 will no longer participate in the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) screener. Instead, the Child Behavior Rating Scale administered in kindergarten, existing attendance, and behavior data will be used to determine necessary social emotional instruction and supports. School teams will use these measures alongside family input, as they develop their understanding of students’ needs and strategies to support them.
Students in grades 3-12 will be able to participate in the SEL screener. School teams and families use this information to develop positive school cultures and support students academically and personally. This year, students will participate in the screener in the fall (October/November) and spring (March). Parents are able to opt their child out of taking the SEL screener. Read more about SEL and signature practices online.
